(Zones of Regulation, 2011)
The Lazy 8 Breathing Strategy can be used to help students calm down and self-regulate prior to returning to classroom tasks, assessments, and activities. Using this strategy, students trace the number 8 with their finger as they regulate their breathing.
Students with learning disabilities can become overly frustrated and anxious when presented with a challenging academic task. In order to reduce negative self-talk, students can use this strategy to control their thoughts and calm down. Having a calm mind may also increase a students’ likelihood of selecting an appropriate strategy to answer a question.
Place your finger on the yellow star in the center of the 8.
Breathe in and drag your finger counter-clockwise, moving your finger along the top left part of the 8.
Keep breathing in until you pass the yellow star and reach the second arrow that reads, “breath out”.
Breathe out slowly.
Repeat the steps as many times as needed.
To promote generalization, a small visual of the strategy can be printed and laminated. This tool can be placed in someone’s wallet, bag, or pocket and can be taken out and used no matter which setting the individual is in. Eventually this visual prompt can be faded and students can trace an 8 on their desks or on their skin.
