ARMS is a revising strategy that can help students determine which components of their writing are important to the topic of discussion. In addition, revising will help students eliminate “fluff, ” which is extra information that is not needed. Moreover, this approach will help students structure their writing and create clear cohesive paragraphs. Through following the series of steps below, students will be able to rearrange sentences and words to increase fluency. Here, students may also adjust word choice to include grade-level vocabulary words.
Students with learning disabilities tend to have difficulty with organizing their thoughts and ideas. For this, after participating in the beginning stages of writing (i.e., prewriting and drafting,) students can use ARMS to revise their writing. This can be done before editing and publishing their work.
Add sentences and words.
Remove unnecessary words or sentences.
Move a sentence or word placement.
Substitute words or sentences for others.
After completing both the prewriting and drafting stage of writing, students can participate in a peer review, where a classmate reads their writing and provides positive corrective feedback regarding their word choice, organization, and content.
