The Pediatric Health Initiative Group (PHIG) is a new patient care project under the MPSA umbrella. It was created by a student in the Leadership Emphasis Area with the intention of improving health literacy in children. PHIG aspires to advocate for the pharmacy profession and improve both health and well-being in a younger audience (K-6th grade) by creating engaging activities that focus on preparing kids for future healthcare-related decisions such as medication safety, eating and exercise habits, and vaccinations. To promote the profession, PHIG has interactive pharmacy-specific activities such as determining if an item is a candy or medicine, reading a prescription label and drawing up a syringe, and punching capsules. PHIG's main events are health fairs and after-school programs at local elementary schools in the Duluth area, but expanded programming to the Twin Cities campus starting this year PHIG.
