JUAN PUEBLO

El personaje nació en una columna editorial y se convirtió en símbolo cívico de la ciudad.

Su creador fue Virgilio Jaime Salinas, quien nació en Guayaquil en 1900 y falleció en 1959. Juan Pueblo fue su obra inmortal que posteriormente fue retomada por los artistas Miguel Ángel Gómez (ya fallecido) y Luis Peñaherrera.

La primera versión de Juan Pueblo usaba una gorrita negra con una estrella en el centro. Vestía ropa vieja y andaba descalzo en compañía de un perro tan famélico como él mismo.

En 1992, el Municipio convocó a un concurso para escoger al representante de la ciudad. Peñaherrera se presentó con Juan Pueblo y ganó. 

El Cabildo adquirió los derechos del personaje para ponerlo como símbolo de una de las campañas más importantes de la ciudad, la de cultura y rescate del civismo guayaquileño “Ahora o Nunca: ¡Guayaquil vive por ti!”. Juan Pueblo cambió su estilo y pasó de ser un indigente a un guayaquileño bien vestido con guayabera blanca y pantalón celeste, para representar los colores de la ciudad.  El cambio del traje lo diseñó el mismo Peñaherrera.

La participación de Juan Pueblo en temas políticos surgió en su primera versión, cuando era parte de una columna editorial. A veces se lo veía armado para defenderse de la delincuencia o moribundo cuando los hospitales estaban en paro y no había atención. También promovía valores como parte de operativos de limpieza o lucha contra epidemias.

El objetivo del cambio de Juan Pueblo que el Municipio emprendió, era que estuviera a la altura del ciudadano común. Ya que se quería representar que el pueblo guayaquileño es elegante y sobrio, por esto era necesario cambiar su aspecto. El objetivo del Municipio fue elevar la autoestima de los ciudadanos y su amor por la ciudad como parte de una campaña de civismo.

Juan Pueblo, personaje ícono de la Perla del Pacífico, el ciudadano que nunca envejece y que es parte de la mayoría de actividades que se organizan en Guayaquil. Ha sido el símbolo de la ciudad, sobre todo en eventos festivos, para las fiestas de julio u octubre se lo puede ver en los carros alegóricos.

Hoy en día Juan Pueblo es aquel guayaquileño que viste sencillo, decidido, madera de guerrero, lucha por sus igualdades, no se acompleja ante las adversidades ni se rinde fácilmente, se identifica con las ideas del pueblo, divertido, folklórico, respira aire de la urbe, participa de todas las manifestaciones que le hacen bien al pueblo. Ese es Juan Pueblo.

The first version of Juan Pueblo wore a black beanie with a star in the center. He wore old clothes and walked barefoot in the company of a dog as starved as himself. In 1992, the Municipality called a contest to choose the city representative. Peñaherrera appeared with Juan Pueblo and won.

The Cabildo acquired the rights to the character to put him as a symbol of one of the most important campaigns in the city, the one for culture and rescue of Guayaquil's civility "Now or Never: Guayaquil lives for you!” Juan Pueblo changed his style and went from being a homeless man to a well-dressed man from Guayaquil with a white guayabera and light blue pants, to represent the colors of the city. The change of the suit was designed by Peñaherrera himself.

Juan Pueblo's participation in political issues emerged in its first version, when it was part of an editorial column. Sometimes he was seen armed to defend himself from crime or dying when the hospitals were unemployed and there was no care. It also promoted values ​​as part of cleaning operations or the fight against epidemics.

The objective of the change of Juan Pueblo that the Municipality undertook, was that it be at the height of the common citizen. Since it was wanted to represent that the people of Guayaquil are elegant and sober, for this reason it was necessary to change their appearance. The objective of the Municipality was to raise the self-esteem of the citizens and their love for the city as part of a civility campaign.

Juan Pueblo, iconic character of the Pearl of the Pacific, the citizen who never ages and who is part of most of the activities that are organized in Guayaquil. It has been the symbol of the city, especially in festive events, for the July or October festivities it can be seen in the floats.

Today, Juan Pueblo is that guy from Guayaquil who dresses simple, determined, a warrior, fights for his equalities, does not get self-conscious in the face of adversity or gives up easily, identifies with the ideas of the people, is fun, folkloric, breathes city air, participate in all the demonstrations that are good for the people.
