EL FAUNO Y LA BACANTE

En 1919, la pieza llegó desde Italia a Guayaquil. Pero cuando las autoridades capitalinas la vieron, se negaron a llevarla a su franciscana ciudad y resolvieron dejarla en nuestro puerto. Eran tiempos de agrias disputas en todo el país entre conservadores y liberales, Iglesia Católica y laicismo.

La escultura era motivo de polémicas y escándalos debido a que, para la Diócesis, la cercanía del monumento le era ofensiva, tanto así que beatas y feligreses la cubrieron con paños negros. Tantas fueron las protestas, que la escultura fue reubicada unos metros más lejos del templo. Pero no era suficiente para algunos.

Finalmente, en su lugar colocaron el inmenso Busto de Juan Montalvo, obra de Alfredo Palacio. Felizmente la bellísima y polémica escultura aún es parte del patrimonio cultural de Guayaquil. Actualmente, sin ningún escándalo El Fauno y la bacante están en el sector de Los Jardines –entre las calles Imbabura y Tomás Martínez–, del Malecón.

In 1919, the piece arrived from Italy to Guayaquil. But when the capital authorities saw her, they refused to take her to her Franciscan city and decided to leave her in our port. Those were times of bitter disputes throughout the country between conservatives and liberals, the Catholic Church and secularism.

The sculpture was the subject of controversy and scandals because, for the Diocese, the proximity of the monument was offensive, so much so that devout and parishioners covered it with black cloths. So many were the protests that the sculpture was relocated a few meters further from the temple. But it was not enough for some.

Finally, in its place they placed the immense Bust of Juan Montalvo, the work of Alfredo Palacio. Fortunately, the beautiful and controversial sculpture is still part of the cultural heritage of Guayaquil. Currently, without any scandal, El Fauno and the bacchante are in the Los Jardines sector – between Imbabura and Tomás Martínez streets – of the Malecón.
