Source Water Protection

o DNREC mapping has identified that the project parcels are located within wellhead protectionareas (unconfined pumping greater than 50,000ldaily) serving the City of Lewes. However the project parcels are located in Sussex County and therefore are subject to the requirements of the Sussex County Source Water Protection Ordinance for projects. The smaller parcel (#3-35-8.00-37.01) located at the southwest corner of the project is 100% inside of the Town of Lewes wellhead protection area and the larger parcel (#3-35-8.00-37.00) has a portion of wellhead protection area on it - as it surrounds the smaller parcel (see Figure 1).

Wellhead protection areas are surface and subsurface areas surrounding a public water supply well where land use activities or impervious cover may adversely affect the quantity and quality of ground water moving toward such wells. Impervious cover prevents precipitation from infiltrating through the soil to the water table aquifer. Impervious cover refers to structures including but not limited to roads, sidewalks, parking lots, and buildings. Any impervious cover within a wellhead protection area has the potential to adversely affect the quality and quantity of drinking water available to consumers.
