Adaptive learning is an online technology-based educational method that analyzes a learner’s performance in real time and modifies teaching methods based on that data. The technology uses algorithms to accustom itself to the learner’s needs; adapting to the learner’s behavior and performance. The AL technology requires learners to demonstrate mastery of concepts efficiently and effectively before they can move on in the program. It challenges learners at an appropriate level, increases understanding, moves the learner along at their own pace while providing feedback and remediation. Detailed data on the learner's performance (time, confidence and accuracy) is provided to instructors so they can identify learner’s strengths and the exact areas where learners are struggling. Instructors analyze this data and adjust offline methods of instruction to help learners’ improve and master the material.[1]
I agree with current trends regarding the impact of adaptive learning on teaching and learning. I’ve witnessed adaptive learning in action with reading software programs, and how the AL components in the programs impact the instructors role in the learning process. In K-12, AL is a key component of a blending learning approach.[2] Instructors use derived data from the AL program to inform offline instruction and personalize learner goals. Learners are grouped by skill and real time ability levels for teacher-led small group differentiated instruction, collaborative and independent practice opportunities, in addition to the online component. In this way, adaptive learning is providing learners deliberate practice, supporting metacognition, engaging learners in game-like activities, and reviewing previously learned material to commit to long term memory. AL also empowers instructors to carry the learning over offline, for more effective instruction.
I would address adaptive learning in the course I’m developing to teach why and how Microsoft Office 365 maximizes collaboration and workplace productivity. I’d begin breaking down the module learning objectives into granular micro units then create a scope and sequence for content delivery to achieve the overall goal. I can address adaptive learning for this corporate level training by implementing a pre-training survey or self assessment to measure competencies and guide learners to identify gaps in their knowledge, then assign customize training modules to address their identified gaps.[3] Finally, I’d determine the formats to present content for each micro learning objective; I’d provide the learner with engagement or participation options to choose from that address their learning styles such as videos, quizzes with different types of questions, hands-on activities, articles to read.
