Abstract
To determine if one has a wandering mind, I examined resources to uncover the characteristics of awareness and that of a wandering mind. While mind-wandering involves getting distracted from a task by one's own thoughts, a wandering mind does have benefits (Weinstein, Sumeracki, & Caviglioli, 2019). Everyone has had their mind wander during conversations, visibly staring off, or finding themselves faking their attention by staring right at the speaker, while the brain is off on another thought (MacLeod, n.d.). One’s ability to stay focused is directly related to the brain’s working memory. Attention is often defined as a “limited-capacity resource” but with awareness practice and a desire to increase attention, one can change their working memory capacity (Weinstein, Sumeracki, & Caviglioli, 2019).
To create an interactive experience, a combination of audio, video, graphics, animations, and textual elements were incorporated. By chunking the lesson into smaller units that incorporate the primacy/recency effect, the learner is more apt to stay focused and retain the content presented (Skjoldager, 2021). Frequency checks are designed to grab the learners’ attention utilizing interactive H5P elements and a count variable button for learners to select tabulating the times their mind-wandered during a task. In this multimedia eLearning, the learner will discover the benefits of a wandering mind, and tips to monitor awareness of their wandering mind.
