About This Program
"Welcome to the U.S. Air Force's premier Family Medicine Residency! Residents here have it all. We have unopposed access to Mike O'Callaghan Military Medical Center, a bedded facility which boasts a wide range of in-house services with a full complement of adult medicine/surgical specialties, obstetrical care, newborn care and an ICU. Additionally, we have awesome off-site rotations at two tertiary hospitals with Level 1 trauma capabilities, a local nursing home, national parks and local community clinics." - FMR website
What to Expect for this Rotation
During this ADT you will spend 2 weeks in clinic (including various days in the procedure clinics), 1 week inpatient days, and 1 week inpatient nights.
While you rotate here as a student you will be added on the WhatsApp group chat. This is used to coordinate communication between the medical student for socials and other activities.
There is what is called a Wild Weekend every few weeks during the summer months. Vegas is surrounded by many national parks within a few hours of driving. During the Wild Weekends, you will go camping at one of these national parks with the other students, some faculty, and residents. Everything will be provided for you if you did not bring any camping gear so do not worry about packing anything of that sort with you. At the very least, pack a reusable water bottle (something like a Nalgene) and some comfortable outdoor clothing, including swimwear. More information regarding the Wild Weekend experience will be provided on your rotation.
Interview Format
You will be interviewed in a meeting room usually by about 8-10 faculty.
Things to do in Vegas
Below is only a tiny list of things to do while in Vegas.
The Strip
If you plan on hitting some slots, go to an ATM somewhere in the city to withdraw some cash so you can avoid the ATM fees in the hotels. If you have USAA, they will reimburse you the ATM fees after. Even if you are not one for gambling, the hotels on the strip can still be plenty fun to just explore and walk through.
Fremont Street
If you are looking for the Vegas experience but want to avoid the huge crowds, head over here. It is the smaller, older, less touristy version of The Strip.
National Parks and other outdoorsy areas:
Hiking
Bouncing off the last point, if you are planning on heading outside check out the AllTrails website before heading out there! There is loads of detailed information about every trail with loads of user submitted photos! They also have a free an app for both Android and iOS.
Skydiving
If you are adventurous, there are a couple of options to go skydiving while in Vegas.
SkyDiveLasVegas is one option.
All You Can Eat Sushi
If you are a fan of sushi, there are lots of places in Vegas for AYCE sushi.
