Beginning Thoughts
Survey research is one method to collect data from groups of individuals to support qualitative or quantitate research. Survey research is flexible as participants can participate in answering questions on their own time via their preferred method (online, phone, mail). It is a popular way to collect data on large populations.

Learning Activity
Find a sample survey online and answer the following questions:
Does this survey use open ended questions or closed ended questions?
Will the data collected from this survey yield a quantitative or qualitative approach? How would you analyze the data collected?
Critique the quality of the questions. Would you make any changes to the questions? Why or why not.
Questions for discussion
Provide an example of where you might use a survey research approach in your current practice.
What are the limitations of a survey research with only 49% response rate from the target population?
Share some methods that would help increase the response rate for a questionnaire/survey.
Think of a research problem and show how you would apply the survey research method to perform your study.
