Attached is PowerPoint slideshow that I used for my GLE (Guided Learning Experience) that I taught. The lesson teaches about the different components that make up a framed load bearing wall and their purpose. At the end of the lesson is a hands on activity where students create a model of the wall using popsicle sticks and labeling the different components. I tie the lesson to many real life applications and use inquiry to get the students thinking about how this knowledge will be useful in their daily lives. I promote a positive learning environment by encouraging students to work together and assist each other during the activity.Â
I have attached my Coping Crown Molding lesson plan and skill sheet that I developed in ALEC 308. I start off my lesson by explaining what Crown Molding is and which construction occupation is responsible for it. Then I have the students watch a shirt little video on how to cope with a crown molding using a miter saw and coping saw. After that, I went out into the shop to demonstrate it and then have the students try it for themselves. This lesson plan allows students to learn and apply a technical skill that will be used, should they decide to pursue a career in finish carpentry. Also, even if they don't decide to become a finish carpenter, it is still a useful skill in case they want to renovate their home someday. Students get to use the Miter Saw, which they learned how to use in a previous lesson, and a coping saw. The students get to do a hands-on activity with real tools and materials used on a job site.
