I have a 10-Hour OSHA Certification that I obtained from my Intro to Construction class in high school. This is something that I plan to implement into my own program because this certification is accepted and most likely required by companies in the industry. To obtain the certification, students work through different modules and take an assessment after each one. This certification takes approximately 10 hours to complete so I would set aside a day out of the week for students to complete this certification at the start of the semester. This certification will help prepare students for the workforce by teaching them about safety and how to identify/prevent hazards. This would also prepare them for the 30-Hour OSHA certification in the future.
Attached is a simple formative assessment that I used during one of the lessons that I taught. The assessment involves three simple questions related to the lesson that the students must answer on a piece of paper. This quick knowledge check references requires students to draw back on information that was taught in the previous class and is a good way to gauge student learning. Later, I used the assessment data to reflect on how well I did in teaching the information and whether the students retained the knowledge or not. I found that a majority of the students missed the same question but got the others right so I addressed it the next class.
