On Miracles
Matt 13:53-58
53When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there. 54Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. "Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?" they asked. 55"Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother's name Mary, and aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56Aren't all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?" 57And they took offense at him.
But Jesus said to them, "Only in his hometown and in his own house is a prophet without honor."
58And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.
John 7:30-31
30At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his time had not yet come. 31Still, many in the crowd put their faith in him. They said, "When the Christ comes, will he do more miraculous signs than this man?"
Matthew points out, that unless we have faith we will not see many miracles, if any...In His hometown, where everyone knew Him and watched Him grow up, it was very difficult for people to see Him differently...As we grow up, you will always be seen as the oldest brother or the little sister...Some people miss out on how you and others have grown...In Jesus' hometown the people that knew Him the most and best had missed this... Therefore, He would do little miracles there, because of their lack of faith...
In John, miracles are viewed a bit differently...John is pointing out that Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ...But the people of Jerusalem do not believe Jesus as the Messiah, the Christ...The people thought, the Christ when He comes will do many more miracles than Jesus did...Jesus had healed a large number, He had fed 5,000 men (with five small loaves of bread and two small fish), He had changed water into wine, He had walked on water...Man needs to see miracles, many miracles...The question is "How many miracles do we need before we believe?"...You must decide for yourself...
