Magnets introduce students to the ideas of negative and positive forces.

Magnetizing Items

Stroke the object you wish to magnetize along a magnet
Continue to move the item you wish to magnetize in the same direction along the magnet
Test the magnet strength of your object on small metal objects to see if you have successfully magnetized your item

TIP: To demagnetize your object, rub it against the magnet in the opposite direction that you used to magnetize it

Give the students various different items and ask them to sort them into magnetic and not magnetic. After all the items have been sorted, give them a magnet and have them test whether or not they were right about their predictions.
