This OSHA certification is another great example of my ability as a CTE teacher to be a prepared and effective teacher. This certification shows that I can keep students safe in a variety of different situations. This specific certification covers topics that are related to promoting workplace safety and health, while being able to recognize workplace hazards and how to safely avoid them. Keeping students safe is a huge part of the job, especially with the amount of time students spend in the shop in agriculture classes. This certification allows me to be able to understand how to handle dangerous situations safely while also meeting Illinois certification and licensing requirements. Keeping myself and others safe is important to me personally, the staff at the school, and the community in which I teach. OSHA certification is another way to show that I am maintaining up-to-date knowledge and skills across all aspects of the skills and technical sciences industry. Connecting with other industry-level professionals is another good way to keep students safe and implement some of those career expectations and requirements. Being able to implement safe practices shows my pedagogical skills and knowledge. Gaining different certifications and licenses will be opportunities I will seek out to better myself, which in turn will better my classroom and students.
Article four shows how teachers are prepared and effective CTE professionals. This can be seen in my portfolio through the professional development plan that is attached. This plan shows what my goals are for student teaching and my first two years of teaching. These goals are great mile markers to make sure I am being the best CTE teacher I can be for my students and the community I am serving. This plan allows me to stay up-to-date about different aspects and skills throughout the entire agriculture industry. Professional development is a great way to maintain and expand my understanding through new topics, activities, and ideas that can be brought back into my classroom. For my second year of teaching, my main goal is to create more engaging activities, which is not only a good way to review my materials to make sure they fit with current standards, but I can tailor these lessons to meet community needs. Professional development is something I get to participate in for the entirety of my teaching career. This opportunity is a great way to cover a wide range of topics that I can use to serve my students and create a high-quality program. Overall, professional development fits perfectly in the portfolio article because every professional development is a way for me as a teacher to never stop learning.
