I believe the classroom should be a safe, welcoming space where every student feels accepted and valued. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to ensure that each student knows they belong and that their voice matters. I view teaching as a reciprocal relationship meaning just as I teach my students, I learn from them as well. This mutual exchange creates a dynamic, inclusive learning environment built on respect and shared understanding. To achieve this, I emphasize the importance of mutual respect and setting clear expectations. I want my students to feel confident that their classroom is a judgment-free zone where they can express themselves openly, provided their words and actions remain kind and respectful. I believe that meaningful learning happens through exploration, questioning, and even making mistakes. I strive to create an environment where students are curious and I encourage them to ask challenging questions, even when those questions push boundaries. By fostering this mindset, I aim to help them develop critical thinking skills, resilience, and the ability to grow both intellectually and emotionally. My goal is to support each student’s unique journey of learning and self-discovery. (Year 3, 2024-2025)
I believe that early intervention is crucial for a student's development of their literacy skills. We must support students by breaking down literacy into its fundamental and foundational steps. These fundamental components include implementing decoding instead of memorizing, following scope and sequence to organize a student's development into steps that are easy for them to understand, and breaking words into word parts and sounds (Honig, 2018, p. 177). These steps will help students develop their skills in reading and writing. Students can use these foundational components as a building block to expand their literacy skills. (Year 2, 2023-2024)
I remember being about 3 or 4 years old when I first experienced immense joy, this joy came from my parents teaching me how to draw and they showed me all the wonderful different colours I could create with. Then when I entered school, specifically in grade 2 I remember having an amazing teacher who always supported me in expressing myself in creative ways. We got the opportunity to create amazing sculptures out of wire and clay and she was always there to cheer us on! She was a teacher I will never forget because she always reminded us how amazing we were and how capable we are of anything we set our minds to. I have many more stories of adult figures that have shaped my life but I just wanted to point out a few relating to my vision and philosophy as a teacher candidate. Being in my first year of my Bachelor of Education degree at Mount Royal University I still have a lot to learn and I am sure my philosophy will develop as I continue my degree. With the first-year fieldwork knowledge I have gained I believe in creating a space for students to reach their full potential in whatever creative format suits them best. I want students to feel comfortable speaking their truth and be confident in the decisions they make. Students should feel safe and excited to come to school and should always know that they can speak about things that are important to them without feeling judged. My future classroom will create a positive and welcoming space for my students to be authentic and creative in everything they do. I want to support my students in any way possible and give them the tools to be successful in society. The main area I would like to develop students' knowledge is interpersonal skills because I believe that is the most important in having a successful life. (Year 1, 2022-2023)
