An inclusive environment is one in which the teacher has taken into consideration the student's individual needs and backgrounds when planning each day so that the students have an opportunity to succeed. The environment we set out for our students must take into consideration culture, race, ethnicity, background, religion, gender, and many other aspects of what makes each student unique.
Fall 2024, Year 3
For my goal this semester when it comes to an inclusive environment, I want to implement differentiated assignments and activities that cater to different learning styles and levels of ability, providing multiple ways for students to demonstrate understanding. (IE2)
I will use a mix of instructional strategies to address different learning styles. Incorporate visual aids, hands-on activities, auditory resources, and interactive discussions in your lessons.
This semester, I was able to use many different strategies to support the complex learners in my practicum school. The one strategy that I used throughout the whole semester and that I found the most beneficial and inclusive was mild, medium and spicy worksheets. This is something my mentor teacher had introduced me to and I really enjoyed using it. Each day, I would choose three worksheets that the students could work on once I had done the lesson. The mild worksheet was questions for students who are still feeling a bit confused about the concepts and need more practice. The medium worksheets were for students who are understanding the concepts but want to practice them further and slightly extend their thinking. Then, the spicy were for students who completely understand and have practiced the concepts so they are ready for an extension. These were all worksheets that the students could choose between depending on how they were feeling and they weren't labelled as 'easy' or 'hard' so the students wouldn't be compared to each other.
Winter 2024, Year 2
Taking my goal from the previous semester, I would like to try and achieve it this semester. My goal is to stay up to date with cultural holidays by bringing in an article/informational tool to open conversations about different holidays - ensuring every student feels represented and recognized in the classroom (IE2).
To achieve this goal I am going to research some different holidays that are coming up in the next few months and bring in either a book, video, or some other informational tool to show that specific holiday. This will start conversations between students about their different backgrounds and also allow students to learn more about holidays that they may not have heard about previously.
I did not personally bring in any artifacts or information tools to open up conversations about different cultural backgrounds. Fortunately though we had a few students who have been celebrating Ramadan and they were very excited to tell the other students about it and chat about why they will not be eating for the next while at school. This opened up a great discussion on different religions, backgrounds and cultural perspectives.
Next year I would like to incorporate at least one book in my classroom that reflects a different culture than my own to help my students and I learn about different backgrounds that shape each unique person.

My goal is to stay up to date with cultural holidays by bringing in an article/informational tool to open conversations about different holidays - ensuring every student feels represented and recognized in the classroom (IE2).

In my fieldwork, we have many students of different backgrounds who celebrate different holidays. Unfortunately, I have not yet had the opportunity to bring in an artifact that can open up conversations about different holidays. I am hoping in the new year I can bring in the book Let's Celebrate! Special Days Around the World by Kate DePalma to read to the students and get to know each of them better by learning about how and what they celebrate.
Winter 2023, Year 1
My goal is to find a strategy that works for the selectively mute student in my Grade 1 class who I am currently unable to get to talk to me. My hope is I can find a way to get her involved in class and allow her to feel more confident in decision-making. I will achieve this by continuing to give her reassurance and using tactics like hand signals so she can answer questions without having to speak.
I am going to achieve this goal by building a stronger relationship with her and giving her opportunities such as using hand signals or writing stuff down and then hopefully she will eventually begin to talk to me.
Throughout my time at Capitol Hill School, I was eventually able to get her to speak a few words to me when we were in a very small group. I also was able to get her to contribute to class lessons by using her fingers to answer specific math questions. Unfortunately, she left for a month-long holiday during my last few weeks at Capitol Hill School so I was not able to develop this any further but I am proud of the progress I made.
Fall 2022, Year 1
My goal is to help a student who is feeling left out or scared to participate and get involved in at least one of the lessons.
I am going to achieve this by watching the students who are not feeling included and finding a strategy with my mentor teacher that can help them get involved without them feeling scared or uncomfortable.
I found this area of my goal setting the hardest to achieve because many of the students are not comfortable sharing and I don’t want to push them to the point where they get upset with me. I watched my mentor teacher get upset with students when they weren’t participating and I could tell it was not helping with the problem and made them shyer. The approach I took was to get to know each one of my students and compliment them on something about themselves every day so they felt special. Eventually, I was able to get them all to talk to me and one very shy kid, in particular, went up to the whiteboard to answer a question with my help. This taught me the importance of the students feeling comfortable in the classroom.
