Fall 2024, Year 3
My goal is to design assessment tasks that require critical thinking and application of knowledge, rather than rote memorization. Incorporate problem-solving activities and case studies into assessments. (A3)
My strategy is to create real-world problems or scenarios relevant to their subject matter that require students to apply their knowledge and problem-solving skills. For example, in a science class, design experiments where students must hypothesize, test, and analyze results.
Towards the end of the semester, once I had built strong relationships with the students, I decided to create a 'mindful toolbox' for the students to use when they need a mind break. I used a list of specific scenarios that were real problems some of the students had dealt with this year and they were required to work in groups to decide what mind-break activity they could do to help them through each scenario. This was a great way to get them excited to use these tools and I am excited to share that they have used the tools in the classroom since!
Winter 2024, Year 2
My goal is to vary the assessment tools to assess my grade 6 students. I want to assess the students in different ways so I make sure they are all assessed fairly based on their needs. (A3)
The way I will assess the students differently is by giving out two different worksheet options for them to write their stories on and then allowing the students who have dyslexia and ADHD to use a computer if that helps them write their stories.
I was able to incorporate different forms of assessment all throughout this semester. For one of my lessons I gave the students two different worksheets to choose from. One was more creative and kid-friendly and the other was more structured for the students who have more analytical minds. I also did an activity that was all oral assessment and we passed a ball around to assess students knowledge. Lastly, I allowed students with computers to use them when writing their stories if they need an oral scribe or struggle with making their printing legible.
Next year I would like to find even more forms of assessment that are creative and meet different students unique learning styles.
Fall 2023, Year 2
My mentor teacher has already mentioned to me since she has 28 students it is very hard to take time to fully assess all their reading levels so to help her and develop my assessment skills I want to take the time to assess at least three students in the class to see where their reading levels are at. I'm hoping that doing this will help develop their skills and help me get to know my students better. (A6)
To achieve this goal I am going to chat with my mentor teacher about students she would like me to assess and take the time to assess them while writing down important information that I can use later to help in lesson planning for the students.
With the student I was placed with for my tutoring assignment I was able to assess her reading level through the core phonics survey. I found out she was at around a grade 2 reading level and I am currently developing her literacy skills using the UFLI manual as well as some fun activities. I hope to assess at least two more kids in the new year and hopefully develop their literacy skills as well.
Winter 2023, Year 1
My goal is to make it very clear to the students the outcomes of a lesson I teach and why they are learning the lesson. It is so important for students to know why they are learning something so they understand the importance of it, especially if I can use real-world relevance to further deepen their understanding and interest in the subject.
I am going to achieve this goal by making very clear real-world relevance in the lessons I teach the students and giving examples to further their knowledge of the importance of the lesson.
I was able to achieve this goal by creating a lesson around walking stories about our field trip downtown. The students were able to collaborate with each other on making sentences about things they experienced downtown on their walking story sheets. I was able to pull in real-world relevance by talking about why it is important to look both ways when crossing the road or listen for any warning signs of danger. I was also able to develop their knowledge of the importance of the artwork that is dispersed throughout downtown. The students had so much fun telling me about their experiences and what they enjoyed most!
Fall 2022, Year 1
My goal is to retrieve one assessment style from my mentor teacher that they use when they have a difficult class and may struggle to grasp certain lessons.
How I am going to achieve this goal is when there are assessment periods I will watch how my mentor teacher assesses their students who are having more difficulty with the curriculum.
Throughout my fieldwork, I have experienced many students in the class who show immense difficulties with the curriculum for a variety of reasons. In each subject, I had a lot of opportunities to watch how he assesses students based on their unique abilities and improvements throughout the year. I learned how you can give the students variations of the same test so then the ones who are struggling more are not required to do the exercises that will be too difficult for them and the ones that are improving quickly can continue to develop their knowledge. The other assessment strategy I learned is setting the students up with a partner; one who is significantly ahead in their curriculum knowledge and one who is struggling and they collaborate on activities together so they learn to work together and help each other problem-solve.
