Professional responsibility is a life-long process that develops as we gain more knowledge about things like legal issues, Indigenous recognition and understanding, and creating an inclusive environment that will allow us to have good relationships with colleagues and students. All these important traits I am starting to learn and these will progress as I move through the next four years of my schooling and into my teaching career.
Fall 2024, Year 3
My goal is to continue developing my understanding of inclusivity, Indigenous perspectives and strategies on creating an inclusive environment in the classroom. (PR11)
I will reflect on my experiences and learning throughout the year by maintaining a professional journal that documents my growth in understanding legal issues, Indigenous perspectives, and inclusivity strategies.
At the start of this semester, I got myself a journal to put any important information from my practicum into. I was able to collect a lot of valuable information that I look forward to using in my next practicum. I wrote down tips & tricks from my mentor teacher, feedback from my lessons, important websites she and the school use and any other important information which I found very helpful. This is something I want to incorporate as a goal again next year.
Winter 2024, Year 2
This semester, my goal is to take the advice my mentor teacher gave me last semester from my read-aloud lesson to help me develop an even better and more effective lesson this semester. (PR5)
My strategy to achieve this goal is to read over the notes I received from my mentor teacher, reflect on my understanding of what I could improve on, and implement those into the three-part lesson I will be teaching in February.
This was a goal I was able to achieve through using the strategy of reviewing my notes and improving my lessons through those. The biggest thing I took away from my first lesson to do in my next ones was emphasizing the 'why' for the students so they could be more motivated to succeed in their assignments. I was able to teach a lesson on story writing and picked a picture prompt that the students found exciting to write about! They all wrote for 15 minutes and it was a great intro to story writing to set them up for the next few lessons.
In one of my lessons I was able to create a rubric for the students and I would love to incorporate that more in my third year since it was very beneficial for my students.
Fall 2023, Year 2
My goal is to strengthen my abilities to create lesson plans for my grade 6 class that will develop their knowledge of a specific subject and adhere to everyone's learning styles and levels of understanding. (PR6)
The ways I am going to make sure I achieve this goal is by getting advice from my mentor teacher about how to implement inclusivity into my lesson plans and also receiving feedback after lesson plans about what I can further improve on. This will include not only getting feedback from my mentor teacher but also the students so I know what is best for them as well.
Through my read-aloud lesson plan, I was able to implement differentiation so that every student felt confident in achieving the goal of the lesson. I allowed the students to either ask a question they had about what might happen in the book or use their evidence-based learning to come up with a prediction of what they think will happen. As a class, we first brainstormed what a prediction is and what a question is to help the lower-level students who may struggle to understand the meaning of those words. Then I allowed students to work in groups to come up with their predictions and questions. In the end, we came back to a class discussion on some of the ideas they came up with which allowed the students who struggle with writing to verbalize their understanding.
Winter 2023, Year 1
My goal is to gain two professional relationships in my fieldwork that further develop my knowledge of teaching. I will achieve this by making an effort to sit in the lunch room with other teachers and asking important questions that I can later reflect on to help develop my teacher presence.
My strategy to achieve this goal is to stay at lunch at least a few times to make more connections with other teachers and take the time to walk around the school to get to know the other classroom environments.
I was able to create one professional relationship with the other Grade 1 teacher but unfortunately, I did not create any more. My mentor teacher and the other grade 1 teacher collaborated at least once per day on various activities and lessons they needed help with. It was such a great opportunity to watch their collaboration process and how much support they gave to each other.
Fall 2022, Year 1
My goal by the end of this semester is to read through the expectations of a teacher in Alberta which include the School Act, policies and procedures of the school authority, the code of conduct, the Alberta Human Rights Act, and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
My strategy to achieve this goal is to spend one day a week going through each website that reflects a teacher's expectations in Alberta.
I was able to achieve this goal by using the action plan I had laid out for myself. I spent a few hours each week researching each of the categories of the expectations of an Alberta teacher and wrote down the key points of each one. I learned a lot about my responsibilities as a teacher and understand now that I have a crucial role in protecting and supporting my students and obtaining a professional body of knowledge. Reading through these gave me a much better understanding of my responsibilities as a teacher in Alberta.
