Building a Professional ePortfolio OER Textbook by Lynn Meade
I loved this class so much. I genuinely believe that I received a beyond-beneficial experience in this class that will help me in my future endeavors. I was able to work on my personal brand professionally and enhance my resume so it was perfect. Not only did we work on ourselves in class we also were exposed to other professionals in the class who could help us find internships and work on our resumes. Student Course Review

"This course combines all the things that I love to teach — self-exploration, storytelling and professionalism. Students in this class will have a chance to reflect on their strengths and weaknesses and create an action plan. The focus is not, 'What do you want to do?' but rather 'Who do you want to be?'"
"My biggest goal is to equip students to be successful, to meet their college and life goals, and to feel like they have the personal knowledge and the self-confidence to pursue those goals."
The final exam project in Second Year Experience is a networking event where students interact with key administrators and campus leaders.
Here are a few things students wrote:
After attending this event, I feel that I have broadened not only networking skills, but also personal growth skills.
I also feel as if it will help me with future professors. I always want to have a relationship with them, but I am too scared to actually talk to them. With having these skills and understanding that they sometimes get nervous too, I will start talking to them more. I think these are great life skills to have and use forever.
I took my 150 students class outside on the lawn for an interactive activity. They made a circle and then stepped forward when a topic related to them. To debrief, they broke into small groups to discuss their learning experience. and then wrote individual reflections of the experience.
One of my goals is that my students will make a friend in class. I work had to create meaningful and engaging learning activities where they build relationships with each other and make meaningful connections with the material.

Hog Parody: Water Piggies
Monet's Water Lilies by Lynn Meade
Most real-world applicable class I've ever taken. Meade taught us the best and most useful tips and practices in public speaking, whether that be to a small group or an auditorium we learned what it takes to be not just an effective speaker, but a speaker that can connect with their audience in a unique way. This professor is one of the hardest working teachers I've ever had and she puts in just as much effort helping her students learn the material as well as develop a personal connection and help foster them into better people.

I loved that the class actually made me a better public speaker, which I didn't expect. I used lessons I learned in the class in other classes. I specifically learned how to make effective presentations and how to time my speeches and cut them down to appropriate length. I have grown in confidence as a speaker. I loved that your teaching style was more conversational and allowed students to interact despite the online interface. Student Evaluation COVID Remote Semester 2021
I nominated and coached Anna Frances Chancellor who became the student graduation speaker. She aced it and I was so fortunate to get a thank you letter from her mother who thanked me for contributing so much to her daughter's academic and personal growth.
Public Speaking Honors students listening to a speaker at the Fayetteville Farmer's Market. I love to find ways to help see the many different contexts for public speaking. In this case, they are listening to a speaker on a highly controversial topic which gave them an example of "public speaking in the wild."
My students become lifelong friends. We take group photos at the end of every semester in Advanced Public Speaking. I love that many of them message me to let me know that they are still friends years later. I even have a few students who have annual reunions.
Relationship building is at the heart of my teaching.

Communication in a Diverse World is one of the few classes I've taken so far that actually gave me information that I feel I could use in the real world. Surprisingly, it was full of advice on how to deal with relationships between, well, everyone in my life. It was insightful and overall a refreshing course. Dr. Meade is amazing at her job, she is so sweet, and I felt as though she really valued our opinion and wanted us to expand our thoughts toward all the people around us.
On Family Weekend students are invited to bring their parents to class. I use that as an opportunity to bridge the generational communication divide! Each group translates slang word from their generation. Parent Kyle Livingston noted, "Dr. Meade's class was engaging, lively, and culturally relevant to both Madison’s generation and mine. We’re still referencing that class discussion weeks later!”
Communication in a Diverse World is a large lecture class that meets large auditoriums. Active learning takes more thought in large classes, but I am determined to find ways because students learn so much more when allowed to participate in their learning. Here students are doing the construction challenge that is used worldwide to teach leadership. Students who succeed are those who are willing to try, fail, and do something different. Most students try to over plan and then refuse to adjust so they are not as successful. A very memorable object lesson since students don’t really “get it” until they try for themselves.
Students separate red from black cards in a timed test. They retake the test separating hearts/space and clubs/diamonds for a timed test. When we see how much longer the second test takes, we can talk about automatic preference. This activity is followed up by students taking the Implicit Association Test and then we have in depth discussion about hidden bias and the implications of what that means for everyone.

I absolutely loved this class. Dr. Meade made our class environment a safe space from the beginning, which encouraged us to be active in our learning through discussions, activities, lectures and more. I have been able to apply each and every concept to the outside world, and I am very glad I chose to take this class.

Not only was this an interesting and engaging class, the ways that Dr. Meade approached teaching made it a more meaningful and impactful course. As I said before, each day the class would discuss a different topic, in a different location. Instead of simply asking us to write reflection papers or complete readings, Dr. Meade had the class actively complete activities that required full class participation. For example, on the day we learned about religious influences, the class split into pairs to complete a scavenger hunt of churches. The pairs were required to visit as many churches as possible, noting the key architectural features and items of interest. This activity was interesting and unusual, because unlike traditional methods, we actually got the chance to see examples in person, rather than simply in a textbook.

I like to paint parodies of famous paintings. In each case, I try to find a way to incorporate our school's mascot, the razorback hog. What's the point? It is just about relaxing and having fun. I highly encourage you to do the same--have fun that is. Education can be fun. It should be fun. Education is also about more than just going to class and taking tests.
Every week, I share local bands, art exhibits, sporting events, and other things happening in the area that students can do. I encourage everyone to take walks on the lovely Greenway, to pursue art by checking out the city murals, and try new things that the community has to offer. I encourage everyone in my classes to contribute ideas for date nights, for family weekend, and for road trips.
These are important parts of college that I don't want students to miss.
