The Cordes Chair is a special award presented to a University of Arkansas faculty member who is student centered and cares deeply about students. The Chair Speaker is given an opportunity to make a presentation on a topic of their choice related to teaching. I used my to share the many lessons that my students helped me grow which I in turn used to help others grow.
Topic: Active Learning Hacks that Work
Topic: Students Given Freedom on Projects Worked Harder, Reached Farther, and Exceeded Expectations: Lessons Learned About Giving up Control Giving Students Freedom to Learn
Beyond the Prompt:How a Simple AI Assignment Sparked Discussions on Identity and Representation
What began as a simple classroom exercise to create AI-generated self-portrait, led to a much deeper discussion about self-presentation, social comparison, and bias.
This presentation will ask you to take on the role of a student and to create your own AI image. Using Cooley’s sociological theory, I will ask you to reflect on how your sense of self is shaped by how you believe others perceive you.
How do we use the opinions of others like a mirror to construct our self-concept? How can AI become the new mirror that we use in deciding who we are and how we present ourselves? How does it make us feel about ourselves when AI produces stereotyped images related to gender, race, and culture? When my students were asked to create an AI self-portrait and to consider these questions, a vigorous discussion followed. We create our own identities on a regular basis and AI just might be the tool we need to see that clearly.
Presented at the Lilly Conference using a generous travel grant from the Teaching and Faculty Support Center at the University of Arkansas
In this video, I talk about student engagement in an online college course of Nonverbal Communication. Specifically highlighting engagement with the material, with the other students, with the instructor, and with the community.
Building Self-Regulated Learners:
Small Moments, Big Impact
In this session, discover practical strategies to embed self-regulated learning principles into your classroom with quick, impactful 5-minute lessons. We will start with an overview of self-regulated learning and metacognition but will spend most of the time reviewing examples of how to mix the science of learning with practical strategies that you can use like using distributed practice, racing the clock for writing, leveraging smartphones, and resourcing student learning testimonials. When students know how to learn and when they develop a mindset that they can learn, they are empowered in your classroom and beyond.
Creating ePortfolios for Personal Reflection
and Professional Branding
Students need a way to translate their academic learning into the professional world. ePortfolios serve as the perfect medium for meaningful assignments that foster personal and professional growth while giving them a platform to create their personal brand. We must help students understand that what we are teaching matters not only to their intellectual growth but also that it matters to those who are gatekeepers for their careers. After nearly two years of research, I developed our university’s ePortfolio program, including a Professional ePortfolio class and an OER textbook and I want to share lessons from research and from my personal experience in an engaging experiential manner. Participants will take away practical strategies to implement ePortfolios in a class or a program that focuses on self-reflection, professionalism, and personal branding.

ePortfolio Learning in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Fostering Authentic Assessment Through Inclusive Pedagogies and Design Justice
Presented with Paul Calleja at Teaching Camp on Study Abroad.
In this photo, we are doing a quick engagement activity to see if faculty can match the Irish word with the English meaning. It was a great bridge to talk about not assuming what students know when they go abroad. It is important to have a full orientation with students before travel.
Organized and Presented at New Faculty Orientation
This was a five hour orientation so it was essential that we were both informative and engaging. We worked hard to put together a program where they had opportunities to meet others, to engage with the material and ask questions.
Eportfolios: Giving Students a Platform to Display Their Learning and Progress
As the eportfolio point person on campus, I was excited to learn about the work of Daniel Abrahams and how he uses eportfolios in the music program and the work of Dave Bostwick and how he has Journalism student use eportfolios in his classes. When I reached out to them about joining me as co-presenters at the Baum Teaching Symposium, they were more than willing to share their experiences.
I make presentations to new teachers. Sometimes they are new teaching assistants, sometimes new international faculty, and sometimes new faculty in specialized departments. Every time I spoke, I brought a custom handout that they could keep to remember some of the key information.
When I had an opportunity to write an Open Education Resource textbook on public speaking I added a chapter for teachers. I figured that it would be useful for teachers of public speaking but also useful for any teacher who wanted information on student engagement.
I'm passionate about sharing resources that can be free and widely distributed to those who need it.

Shortly after joining the Teaching and Faculty Support Center, the university went remote because of the pandemic. At that point, our mission became even more important. We provided educational and uplifting programs by Zoom. In this photo, I am at my home office introducing our distinguised chair speaker, Daniel Levine.

Equity Matters: Building a Culture of Belonging Conference. University of Arkanas Student Affairs
Expect small group discussion and challenging thoughts.
Objectives: To help attendees think about little behaviors that signal exclusion, to engage with others about how being excluded influences thoughts, feelings, and actions, to have meaningful dialogue about empathy and forgiveness, to share the piling-on principle related to feelings of hurt and pain, to teach meaningful ways to engage in conversation to help others feel included and to overcome self-doubt by teaching participants ways to start conversation. Expect small group discussion and challenging thoughts.
I wanted to thank you again for the phenomenal presentation today.
The staff members in my department have had wonderful things to say.
It has invoked some great conversations here.
You are a dynamic speaker and I look forward to hearing you speak again.

When the High Impact Practice Conference went online, key participants were asked to make videos of key topics. Attendees would view the videos and then they participated in a virtual escape room. Using information they learned from the videos, they completed modules and games to make their virtual escape.
Participants were given step by step instructions on how to paint a butterfly. The theme was the transormative power of teaching. Key points were that background shapes a learners experiences, we can overcome mistakes by making them part of our picture, and the more contrast, the more beautiful the picture.
I wanted to do something experimental by having a session where participants could paint a picture as I talked about the fundamentals of teaching. One participant wrote, " LOVED this unique activity. Was great for personal expression and networking." Another commented, " I learned more than any other section and enjoyed every bit of it!"
The rating of 4.85 out of 5 made it one of the highest-rated breakout sessions at .Teaching Camp
When asked to reflect about what they learned, one teacher wrote, "Contrast is like diversity, it makes the product more beautiful! "

I was invited to be a speaker at Butterfield Trail Retirement Village for Fulbright Friday. I spoke on the science of stories and encouraged each to tell their stories and to write their stories. I had so much fun staying around after and listening to the rich and meaningful stories that they wanted to share with me.
We each have experriences that have happened to us and lessons learned that it is selfish to hold those back from others. Stories can be your gift to others.
