When I was in fifth grade, I had a peculiar hobby. I made roads. Our house was the first house at the top of a steep hill. Out front, the road was nicely paved and infrequently laden with traffic-- the perfect setting for wagon races. Every child within a two-block radius showed up after school with their radial flyer red wagons in tow ready to test their abilities. Each child wanted to prove that they were the fastest wagon racer in the neighborhood.
As soon as school was out, I would run out and use a chalk rock to draw out a two-lane path that included gentle curves. If the curves were too steep, the wagons tipped over and if the road was too straight, the wagons gained too much speed and crashed. I would test the paths to make sure they were just right for others. I loved the challenge of making the perfect road and loved the joy that came from helping my friends run their perfect race.
I realized that I’ve been making roads ever since. I make paths for others. I pave the way for my students, and I pave the way for other teachers, and I do that through my scholarship.
When I think about my scholarship philosophy, I think the idea of road builder sums it up best. I test out things and then find new ways to do them. I test the new ideas and when I arrive at a meaningful solution, I share those new ideas with others in training, at conferences, and at development sessions. I help others run their best race.
For some people, this may not feel like scholarship, so I want to take a moment to share the science of teaching and learning according to Ernest Boyer. He was one of the loudest voices challenging the traditional view of scholarship beyond the mere discovery of knowledge (discovery scholarship) to include the integration, application, and teaching of knowledge (integration, application, and teaching scholarship) (Boyer, 1990). According to Boyer, the scholarship of teaching and learning involves the systematic study of teaching and learning processes. Peter Felton built on that idea when he created a five-step path for assessing the science of teaching and learning: (1) inquiry into student learning, (2) grounded in context, (3) methodologically sound, (4) conducted in partnership with students, and (5) appropriately public.
I like to think that I am in good company and that Boyer and Felton are road makers too.
I am committed to exploring and implementing evidence-based teaching strategies, instructional technologies, and assessment methods that have been shown to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes and I am intent to share what I learn with others.
I have made sixty-nine presentations on teaching and learning.
I have presented at some of the most prestigious conferences in my field: Ireland International Conference on Education, Lilly International Teaching and Learning Conference, American Association of Colleges and Universities, Association for Authentic, Experiential, & Evidence-Based Learning Conference, Southern Communication Association, National Communication Association. Since our land grant mission is to focus on Arkansas, I advance scholarship in Arkansas presenting state conferences: Arkansas Adjuncts Conference, the OER Arkansas Symposium, the Arkansas Communication Theater Arts Association Annual Conference, the Arkansas Association of Student Assistance Programs and Arkansas Trio Conference, Global Campus Bolt Conference, High Impact Practices Arkansas Conference and the University of Arkansas.
I present on the science of teaching and learning at the University of Arkansas Campus. I have presented at numerous on campus events: Teaching camp, teaching symposium, faculty lunch and learn, High Impact Practices conference, Graduate Teaching Training, Ideals Institute, Walton College Center for Teaching Excellence.
Nationally, I have shared my expertise. In addition to my many conference presentations, I was as an invited speaker for American Association of Colleges and Universities webinar and in a feature for Starlink Professional Development videos. I have written three Open Education Resource textbooks and wrote a book chapter on students with disabilities as a NASPA publication.
I am excited to say that I am invited to be one of the plenary speakers at the Lilly International Teaching and Learning Conference next year.
I make roads by testing new ideas and by sharing those ideas with others at local, state, national and international conferences. I use the science of teaching and learning and in doing so I am “solving problems through research and discovery” and “facilitating transformational experiences.” When our University of Arkansas team was asked to present our ePortfolio campus model at the Association for Authentic, Experiential, and Evidence-Based Learning conference, we made our presentation using the graphic of a road.
It seemed like a fitting visual for a road maker like me.
