Description: The teacher draws upon knowledge of content areas, cross-disciplinary skills, learners, the community, and pedagogy to plan instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals.
Interpretation: The teacher can use multiple different resources such as the community and other areas of content to support each student and how they meet the learning goal.
Description of Artifact: Lesson 6 of the TWS introduced division of decimals. The lesson’s steps for students are listed in the procedure section.
Indicator: 7(c) Develops appropriate sequencing of learning experiences and provides multiple ways to demonstrate knowledge and skill.
Indicator in my own words: This means that the teacher can help students develop their skills to complete the lesson and gives that student multiple ways to do so.
Rationale: Lesson 6 is a great example of Standard 7(c) because it has different steps that students have to follow when dividing decimals. It gives different sequencing and it also accommodates all learners. For example, students are given a problem like 4.2 divided by 7. The worksheet then breaks it down into how many total tenths divided by 7. The students were able to show their knowledge by either doing the diagram method, the area model, or standard algorithm. This gives the student an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge of what they know even if they are still unsure on how to divide decimals. This shows proficiency in Standard 7 because I was able to plan for this lesson and was able to understand that, according to the date collected in the pre-assessment, that students might have a hard time achieving proficiency. I then picked a lesson that broke down the steps of dividing decimals into easier chunks that I thought students would have an easier time digesting. As a result, 15 out of the 16 students showed proficiency on the lesson.
Description of Artifact: Lesson 4 of the TWS is the first worksheet given after the pre-assessment. It deals with decimal addition.
Indicator: 7(L) Knows when and how to adjust plans based on assessment information and learner responses.
Indicator in my own words: Creates and plans lessons based on prior data collected and what the students want to learn.
Rationale: Lesson two is a great example of 7(d) because I didn’t have to do much teaching when it came to decimal addition. I still wanted to touch on it so I only spent a day on it and it was mostly review. I used the data I collected from the pre-assessment to justify only spending one day on decimal addition. This lesson shows proficiency in Standard 7 because I realized that students did not need to spend that much time on decimal addition so I planned on having only one day dedicated solely to decimal addition. I would still have problems based on addition throughout the unit but the students showed me through the data collected during the pre-assessment that they did not need more practice on that specific operation.
