Description: The teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical/creative thinking and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues.
Interpretation: The educator can connect different perspectives to better student engagement and can use real world issues and problems to help enhance student learning.
Description of Artifact: The Kansas City Royals worksheet was an adding and subtracting decimals worksheet that dealt with word problems around money.
Indicator: 5(b) Engages learners in applying content knowledge to real world problems through the lens of interdisciplinary themes (E.g., financial literacy, environmental literacy).
Indicator in your own words: The teacher has students apply their knowledge to real world problems such as financial and environmental problems.
Rationale: This artifact is a good example for the Indicator 5(b) because this worksheet dealt with money as well as real world problems that students might see. For example, the instructions asked for students to find a combination of food, tickets, and drinks. The objective was to find combinations of all three that did not go over the budgeted price. These are all real world examples of financial problems students might have later on in their lives. This is a good example of Standard 5 as well because I was able to engage learners in a creative way and also guided them to solve questions that they might see in the real world. Students can now apply these math concepts to situations they might see in the real world.
Description of Artifact: This worksheet was a lesson that I gave during my Teacher Work Sample. It shows decimal multiplication in different forms.
Indicator: 5(c): Facilitates learners’ use of content tool and resources to maximize content learning in varied contexts.
Indicator in my own words: The teacher uses different resources to help each student maximize their proficiency in a topic.
Rationale: This worksheet is a great example of the Indicator 5(c) because it shows multiple ways of tackling decimal multiplication. For example, it has students draw disks on the place value charts, it has students breaking apart numbers into an area model and solving that way, and it also has more difficult word problems that students can solve how they choose. This shows proficiency in the Standard because it gave multiple ways for each student to best show their understanding of decimal multiplication. In addition, this worksheet gave students multiple tools and strategies to solve complex multiplication problems.
