Interpretation: Teachers work with students to make a positive classroom environment that supports everyone. The environment also adapts to every student's needs.
Description of Artifact: The artifact used was a professional development strategies list that the faculty created. It was meant to give teachers strategies on how to deal with certain behaviors.
Indicator: 3(c): Collaborates with learners and colleagues to develop shared values and expectations for respectful interactions, rigorous academic discussion, and individual and group responsibility for quality work.
Indicator in my own words: Teachers work with students and teachers to create strategies to help work towards a positive classroom environment.
Rationale: This artifact is a good example for Standard 3 because it shows faculty collaborating on strategies to create a group of shared values and strategies that could be helpful for classroom management. For example, faculty brainstormed strategies to deal with students being disruptive in a respectful way. This artifact shows proficiency with standard three because disruption can be a big reason why classrooms have negative learning environments and being about to collaborate on how to handle disruptive behavior is one step forward in creating that positive learning environment every classroom needs. I used this in student teaching by trying out some of the strategies that were recommended on the list such as modeling and pausing when students are getting off task. I then used these strategies in my classroom and this helped create a positive environment for all to learn, and reinforced the class expectations.
Description of Artifact: The free time tracker is a place where I can keep traack of the points that they earn throughout the week. These points go towards free time on Friday.
Indicator: 3(k) Knows how to collaborate with learners to establish and monitor elements of a safe and productive learning environment including norms, expectations, routines, and organizational structures.
Indicator in my own words: The teacher can create a safe environment that is also equitable for all students.
Rationale: The free time tracker is a great example of 3(k) because I would collabrate with students on our expectations of the classroom. Throughout the week students have an opportunity to earn points towards their free time on Friday. This helps create a positive environment where everyone is working towards the same goal. For example, students get points for answering questions correctly, for follow expecations of the classroom, as well as cleaning up and putting away classroom material. Students also get points for following school wide rules such as walking in the hallway as well as being silent when walking to and from specials. This shows proficiency in Standard 3(k) because having a free time tracker promotes a positive classroom and school environment. In addition to promoting an environment that is safe it also holds students accountable for their actions in the classroom and around the school.
