Descriptor: The teacher understands how students learn and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.
Interruption: The teacher understands that students learn and understands the factors that affect development. The teacher then designs learning around those factors.
Description of Artifact: Daily math is the monthly math packet that students get for homework. It has a wide variety of problems.
Indicator: 1(i) Is committed to using learners’ strengths as a basis for growth, and their misconceptions as opportunities for learning.
Indicator in my word words: The teacher can find the strengths of each student as well as where their mistakes might be and using those mistakes as an area of growth.
Rationale: The Daily Math packet is a great example for 1(i) because it shows where each students’ strengths are. Each student can choose to do as many problems as they want and it gives the teacher an idea of what questions some students really understand and what questions students do not understand. For example, if student A understands area and perimeter but student B does not then it might be a good idea to pair them together. This will be a good opportunity for learning for student B as well as it gives student A a chance to better their understanding by teaching it to someone else. Students misconceptions are also addressed by going over any problems that students got wrong on the board before every math lesson. This helps clear up any common misconceptions students might have. This shows proficiency in standard one because the math packet shows that each student brings their own knowledge to the classroom and that means that one student might know a math fact that another student does not. This allows for there to be positive dialogue between those students. This can help create a positive classroom environment as well as better their knowledge on that specific math fact.
Description of Artifact: The pre-assessment was used to give me a baseline of what I needed to teach to the students. It gave me data on what students knew and what students might need extra support on.
Indicator: 1(h) Respects learner's differing strengths and needs and is committed to using this information to further each learner's development.
Indicator in your own words: The teacher understands each students strength's and needs. The teacher would use this information to further each students learning.
Rationale: 1(a) was used in this lesson because I was assessing the individual's performance so that I could design and modify a whole unit based on the data that I collected. The data that I collected allowed me to get a better grasp on what students needed more help on and what students were already proficient in. For example, I noticed that from the data that I collected, that most students had a good understanding of how to add and subtract decimals. However, I realized that from the data, students were having a difficult time multiplying and dividing decimals. With that information I decided that I would spend more time on those operations to make sure that each student was proficient before moving on to the next topic.
