Standard 9 - Professionalism, Leadership, and Advocacy – The competent teacher is an ethical and reflective practitioner who exhibits professionalism; provides leadership in the learning community; and advocates for students, parents or guardians, and the profession.
Artifact Description: Being a Mandated Reporter proves the commitment and responsibility that I am taking order to be a teacher. There are so many things out there and as a teacher our job is not only to educate minds but also to make sure that students are being treated and respected as they should be not just in the class setting but also in their home life. Teachers have a lot of responsibilities but looking out for not just their own students but other students should be a main priority.
IPTS Connection: This cnnects with IPTS Standard 9B) knows laws and rules (e.g., mandatory reporting, sexual misconduct, corporal punishment) as a foundation for the fair and just treatment of all students and their families in the classroom and school. As a mandated reporter I am obligated to report any signs of abuse or negligence and have nothing but the best interest and welfare of all students.
What I learned: I learned how big of a role being a teacher in as student's life is. It means always looking out for them and keeping an eye out if anything looks suspicious. My actions and decisions can affect students and can make a difference. The safety of the students is of utmost importance.
Artifact Description: Working in a school setting for the past few years I have been able to get lots of training in how to respond in case of an emergency. It is important to have a folder with all of the students names and green and red cards to provided at the designated meeting place. It is important to know where students are at all times so that in the case of an emergency you know how to find them or contact someone the person they are with. Drills are extremely important and should be practiced at the beginning of the school year in order to prepare oneself and the students in case of an emergency.
IPTS Connection: This connects with IPTS Standard crisis intervention protocol, initial response 8 actions (e.g., whether to stay in or evacuate a building), and first response to medical emergencies (e.g., first aid and life-saving techniques). There is not just one way of having this done, this involves being able to think quickly once an emergency occurs. To do this one has to think of all different scenarios during these drills to be better prepared in the event of something occurring.
What I learned: I learned how to be vigilant of my surrounds all of the time. I learned that I should be aware of where the AED machine is located, how many exits there are, where the nearest exit is. These are all crucial when it comes to saving someone's life and should always be aware of these things. Trainings and refreshers every now and then are good to remind staff of things that could happen and so that we are better prepared.
