Standard 6 - Reading, Writing, and Oral Communication – The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
Artifact Description: Students use this website to get extra support in both Reading. There is an option to either have the practice the basic for their grade level and they advance as they learn more skills and/ or assignments for topics they are currently working on can be assigned to them for extra practice.
IPTS Connection: This project connects with IPTS Standard 6J) selects, modifies, and uses a wide range of printed, visual, or auditory materials, and online resources appropriate to the content areas and the reading needs and levels of each student (including ELLs, and struggling and advanced readers. Students can work independently and at their own pace to read and answer questions and then they will advance once their skills have improved.
What I learned: By using this website I learned that students really enjoy working on the computer and get easily motivated with the badges they obtain when they pass the level. This keeps them motivated to keep working harder to get more badges and at the same time they are learning and practing the concepts more in depth.
Artifact Description: Students from my student teaching use this anchor chart after they have read stories in order to rmember the important topics of the story. By using this model and referencing it to their own hand they can remember the key parts to a story. They then have a blank worksheet with the handprint on it and lines so they can write down the story details.
IPTS Connection: This project connects with IPTS Standard 6Q) integrates reading, writing, and oral communication to engage students in content learning. After students have read the story they discuss the retelling hand details and write it on the provided worksheet. This is a great model because it is not necessarily for one story but can be used with any story.
What I learned: I learned that having this anchor chart and modelling it on my habd with the students helped them to remmebr because they were able to relate it to their own hand. Discussing as a class before having them write it helped them to remember various parts of the stories. Having their hand as a retelling resource makes it easy for them to remember even if they do not have the anchor chart available.
