Standard 8 - Collaborative Relationships – The competent teacher builds and maintains collaborative relationships to foster cognitive, linguistic, physical, and social and emotional development. This teacher works as a team member with professional colleagues, students, parents or guardians, and community members.
Artifact Description: While student teaching in the bilingual classroom I put together a newsletter in order to keep parents up to date on what was going to be going on in the classroom during the week. Upcoming events, spelling words, homework due, and ELA and Math concepts for the week are all listed on there so parents knwo what is going on and can help their child as needed. Sending this weekly communication to parents helps the teacher/ parent communication.
IPTS Connection: This project connects with IPTS Standard 8P) develops professional relationships with parents and guardians that result in fair and equitable treatment of each student to support growth and learning. Having and maintaining this communication improves parent relationships because they know what is going on in the classroom. Teachers and parents are both involved in the students daily life and should be an equal in helping the student grow and learn.
What I learned: I learned that parents want to be involved in what their child is doing. They want to be updated and posted on the good as well as the bad. I learned that by sharing the good before the bad will also make a big impact to form that parent/ teacher relationship to work together as a team instead of against each other. They both want what's in the best interest for the child and should be working together to maintain this positive relationship.
Artifact Description: While students are assigned to one classroom it is a team effort to work with other colleagues to help the student. Students have many different backgrounds and different needs so have to communicate with EL teacher, SPED teacher, gym teacher, etc. if there are any issues that need to be addressed and vice versa. Everyone is working for to help the student grow not only academically but mentally and physically so it is important to collaborate and work together as a team because everyone is helping to shape the puzzle path for the student.
IPTS Connection: This project connects with IPTS Standard 8J) works with all school personnel (e.g., support staff, teachers, paraprofessionals) to develop learning climates for the school that encourage unity, support a sense of shared purpose, show trust in one another, and value individuals. All teachers are equally there to provide an education for the student and they need to collaborate with each other especailly if there are any student issues. They should have same school wide rules so students know what is expected of them in all classrooms and know that they should treat all teachers with equal respect and follow the school rules and expectations in all classrooms.
What I learned: I learned that communication with parents as well as colleagues are important for everyone's well being. Students are all different and by collaborating with different teacher you can help a student grow. The student doesn't necessarily have to be in that teachers classroom but they might know of an effective method to help out with a certain situation.
