Standard 4 - Learning Environment – The competent teacher structures a safe and healthy learning environment that facilitates cultural and linguistic responsiveness, emotional well-being, self-efficacy, positive social interaction, mutual respect, active engagement, academic risk-taking, self-motivation, and personal goal-setting.
Artifact Description: Students need something to be help them stay on track and make sure they are following the rules. While I was student teaching this behavior chart was used to remind students of their expectations. They were rewarded with points not only individually but also as a group when they are doing as they are expected to do. If they are not doing as expected points are also taken away. As a group they were able to get a reward once they reached a certain number.
IPTS Connection: This project connects with IPTS Standard 4J) creates clear expectations and procedures for communication and behavior and a physical setting conducive to achieving classroom goals. Students are redirected if they receive negative points as well as when they see a student receiving positive points.
What I learned: This is a great reinforcement for students to follow the classroom rules. Students react better when they see other students being rewarded for something they should be doing versus what they should not be doing. They like seeing the points they are earning and work together as a class to keep each other on track to get their next reward.
Artifact Description: This is the morning slide that I created for my students during student teaching to guide students when they walked in the classroom. This created a sense of indepence so they know what they are supposed to do when they walk in the classroom. Since it is 1st grade and many of them do not know how to read the picture cues have also helped to keep them on track.
IPTS Connection: This project connects with IPTS Standard 4K) uses strategies to create a smoothly functioning learning community in which students assume responsibility for themselves and one another, participate in decision-making, work collaboratively and independently, use appropriate technology, and engage in purposeful learning activities;. Students know what they have to do and when they are done with that they know what they have to do next with this clear visual on the smartboard.
What I learned: I learned that students do like to be independent but they want to be really sure of what they have to do. Once they get into a routine and they know what to do even if they can't read they can look at the key visuals for reference. It is nice for both the students and the teacher to have students be able to independently know what they have to do next.
