Artifact Description: Hispanic Heritage month is September 15-October 15th. The 1st/2nd grade bilingual program I was student teaching in had a huge Hispanic population and each class worked on a poster board displaying the country of their choice during the Hispanic museum night. After learning about Mexico I decided to incorporate a few different items from that country including small piñata's to display their festivities, papel picado which is paper used for decoration purposes and festivities, guitar's which represent the cultures music, and the sun and the moon which is an important symbol to the culture.
IPTS Connection: This project connects with IPTS Standard 1A understands the spectrum of student diversity (e.g., race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, special education, gifted, English language learners (ELL), sexual orientation, gender, gender identity) and the assets that each student brings to learning across the curriculum. Students put into use their prior knowledge from their own culture at home and things they learned during the lessons in class. Students got the opportunity to learn more in depth about this country a well as other countries.
What I learned: Through this project, I learned the importance of integrating students cultures into a lesson and having them share where their family is from. Many being from Hispanic descent were excited to share and relate to the what we were reviewing.
All About Me Poster
Artifact Description: At the beginning of the school year everything is new for both students and teachers so it is important to get to know each other. Students come from so many different backgrounds not just culturally but the people in their family. Students worked on All About Me sheets so they can not only share more about themselves but also get to know their classmates and their background as well by reading them out loud.
IPTS Connection: This project connects with IPTS Standard 1K) facilitates a learning community in which individual differences are respected. Students were able to share about their own person backgrounds and listen to what others had to say about them. They go the opportunity to listen and learn that they are not all the same and have different pets, siblings, food, and even colors but they should all be treated equally with all those differences. put into use their prior knowledge from their own culture at home and things they learned during the lessons in class. Students got the opportunity to learn more in depth about this country a well as other countries.
What I learned: I learned that students want to share especially if it is something about themselves. They want everyone in the class know that they have dogs or cats too and it is important for them to for relationships with other students when they share this nand find out that they have something in common. This also helps those shy students open up and talk especially when they find out they have something in common with another classmate.
