Standard 5 - Instructional Delivery – The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student.
Artifact Description: Students from my bilingual student teaching class first had to pick an ugly sweater then design color and or add designs to it to make it ugly. Once they finished designing it they had to write on the sweater details describing why it was ugly. Students then had to vote on one from the class who then won a prize for the most creative in making it ugly. The creativity students expressed while creating these helped them think about the description they would then be writing about it. Some students still needed sentence starters to help them get started but all students completed sentences describing their sweater.
IPTS Connection: This project connects with IPTS Standard 5A) understands the cognitive processes associated with various kinds of learning. Students can express their creativity to capture that portion of their learning but it can guide them to a different or the next part of that lesson.
What I learned: Through this project, I learned when students put their mind to it they are more likely to complete it and give more of an effort. Students first creating it shows their creativity side, then when they write they can express themselves better since they created it and they want to share it.
Artifact Description: During one of my return observations and lessons I had to practice a second lesson review with 4th grade students. They had been working on this previously so they knew it but were still struggling with it so I did a review with them. Students were from different levels so I had to think of different ways to get their attention. The different toolt they were able to use for the ten frame included the online tool,Didax website, as well as the physical counters so they could use on the ten frame.
IPTS Connection: This project connects with IPTS Standard 5C) knows how to implement effective differentiated instruction through the use of a wide variety of materials, technologies, and resources. Having the option to use the different tools helped different types of learners get the required result.
What I learned: Through this method I learned that students do not all learn concepts the same way. Sometimes it does take some trial and error to figure out what works best with one student or another one. By having different methods it can engage a variety of students and keep them engaged especially since it is something new to them.
