Standard 7 - Assessment – The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.
Artifact Description: In my Educational Psychology class, we were asked to construct a test in Google Forms so that we would be able to analyze the results. I constructed a test with 8 multiple choice and 2 short answer questions and had a total of 14 people take this test. By having these “test” students take the quiz I was able to assess what performance level they fell under which falls under the performance indicator of 7J user assessment results. By looking at the incorrect and correct answers I was able to see what concept the students were well informed on and which ones they still need to practice on, or which ones I need to do a better job in teaching them so that they can understand the material correctly to enhance their learning.
IPTS Connection: These types of assessments connects with performance indicator 7K) appropriately uses a variety of formal and informal assessments to evaluate the understanding, progress, and performance of an individual student and the class as a whole. The results of the quizzes helped me to find the formulas of mean, median, and mode to evaluate where the students that took this test stand individually and as a class. I was able to see the average score and how many were able to score above the average and below the average. I could see where each student falls on the chart compared to the class as a whole and based on that I can tell how many students need more help and in what category.
What I learned: This type of assessment project was extremely beneficial to my understanding of constructing a test and evaluating the results. Using technology such as Google Forms to create the data and receive was extremely user friendly. I also liked how it was able to show me charts from the combined data so I could see information such as the most questions answered correctly and how each student did. This tool is helpful with performance indicator 7O because with it I can monitor performance and then be able to create other graphs to traffic how a student is progressing individually and how a class is growing as a whole.
Artifact Description: Students are tested at the beginning of the year in Reading and Math to see what level they are at and they are placed into that color category. They are then tested throughout the year and if their scores have improved they are then moved up on the data wall. The goal is to have students in the red levels grow to the green and for the green to maintain and grow even further up on the green level.
IPTS Connection: This connects with IPTS Standard 7G) understands how to make data-driven decisions using assessment results to adjust practices to meet the needs of each student. Depending on where the students test results are located then it is known where students need extra support in so that lessons can be adjusted to help those students move up and grow.
What I learned: Through this I was able to obtaina clear visual of which students is in what color catgory level. By getting this visual I wa able to properly group sudents who needed that support in the group where I can guide them toegther. I can also have the students in the higher level help those in the lower groups while also having them practice their skills. It was nice to have this visual versus just on paper.
