Every classes of sentence can be further grouped into two types:
i) Affirmative.
ii) Negative.
Look at the following sentences:
a) Rohan is a brave boy.
b) India is my mother land.
c) Rabindranath Tagore won the noble prize.
d) I am going to Kolkata.
All the sentences above, are Affirmative ( positive) sentences.
Again,
a) He is not working properly.
b) He has no intention to tell a lie.
c) There was no one inside the class.
d) Not seeing me at the platform, he got angry.
All the sentences above are Negative sentences.
* Uses of “No” in Negative sentences:
a) As a negative answer of any question.
Eg: Have you met him? No, I haven‟t.
Are they playing? No, they aren‟t.
Do you like movie? No, I don‟t.
b) As a negative determiner.
Eg: No man was there in the room. (Not any man)
There is no pen in my box.
No book was available in the market.
c) In some Idiomatic Phrases, like no use, no good, nobody, no one, no matter etc.
Eg: It is no use asking him to be laborious.
He is no good, all your effort will go in vain.
Nobody likes a bad boy.
No one was present there.
No matter how much he tries, he will not succeed.
d) Before some words like fewer, less, more, better.
Eg: No fewer than ten boys were present.
I will take no less than ten rupees.
You will no more talk to Kiran.
This pen is no better than what I used yesterday.
* Uses of “Not” in Negative sentences:
a) When an article sits before a noun:
Eg: This is not the boy I was talking about.
I want not an apple, but a mango.
This is not a ball, but a bat.
b) Before a Verb, to make it negative:
Eg: I do not want Ravi to go there.
You have not met my son yet.
I did not expect him in this ceremony.
c) Before some words or phrases like many, more, much, another, the same, only, a little, a few, enough.
Eg: I will take not more than one hour to reach there.
Not much is heard about him.
He is not only a poet but also a painter.
Only four hour study is not enough.
This phone is not the same as I bought.
d) Before a Participle or Gerund:
Eg: Not being rich is sometimes good. (Gerund)
Not seeing me, he felt lonely. (Participle)
