Def: It is a word that describes a noun or a pronoun. (How a noun or a pronoun is.)
Eg: Good boy, intelligent girl, black dog, beautiful flower, tasty food, etc.
Types: Adjectives can be divided into classes that are given as follows:
i) Descriptive adjectives can be classified into two types:
a) Proper Adjective: They are the adjectives that are formed from proper
nouns. Eg: He is an Indian player.
This is a French wine.
b) Adjective of Quality: They are the adjectives that refer to any quality of a noun or a pronoun.
Eg: Hari is an honest person.
He is a lazy boy.
ii) Adjectives denoting Amount and Number can be classified into two types:
a) Amount or Adjective of Quality are the words that denotes the amount
of any uncountable noun. Some, Much, No, Great, Sufficient, little, All, Whole, Half, etc are
Amount or Adjective of Quality.
Eg: Give me some money.
You drank all the milk.
b) Number again can be divided into two types:
Cardinal- One, Two, Three, Four, etc
Ordinal- First, Second, Third, Fourth, etc.
Multiplicative- Single, Double, Triple, Four fold, etc.
iii) Indicative Adjectives can be classified into seven types:
a) Demonstrative: Words like 'This, These, That, Those, All, etc' when used as adjectives, then they are
demonstrative adjectives.
Eg: This bat is mine.
All these boy are from Burdwan.
b) Distributive: Words like 'Each, Every, Either, Neither, etc' when refers to every individuals among
several, they are distributive adjectives.
Eg: Each question carries ten marks.
Everybody is requested to be present.
c) Possessive: Words like 'My, Your, His, Its, Their, Her, Our, etc' that are formed from the possessive case
of a pronoun, they are called possessive adjectives.
Eg: This is our house.
Your son is with me.
d) Emphatic: Words like 'Very, Own, etc' that emphasizes on noun, are called emphatic noun.
Eg: This is the very ball that we saw yesterday.
My own friend has betrayed me.
e) Interrogative: The words like 'What, Which, Whose, etc' when sits before a noun and used as an
adjective for questioning, are called interrogative adjective.
Eg: Whose shirt is this?
What game is he playing?
Which book does he want?
f) Relative: Relative pronouns like 'Which and What' when used as adjectives, then they are relative
adjectives.
Eg: I did what was possible for me.
I stood first in the exam, which fact caused my happiness.
g) Exclamatory: When 'What' is used for exclamation, then it is exclamatory adjective.
Eg: What an idea!
What a result!
