English Language Development

We strive to provide each student with the individual tools they need for success. As part of our English Language Development instruction, we try to incorporate cultural activities so that all children gain an understanding and appreciation for their immediate world and for the world around them.

Parents and grandparents from other countries are welcome to share about their countries, families, homes, experiences, and languages. Amazingly, our families and other visitors have come from Brazil, Egypt, Iran, Peru, Romania, Russia, United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela. They have shared items such as photos, clothing, food, and other products representing their countries and cultures with students.

As each student enrolls in school, a Home Language Survey is completed. Based on the survey, an Initial Language Assessment may be conducted. Each student’s language classification is then determined as English Only, Fluent English Proficient or English Learner. English Language Development instruction is provided to English Learners in order to help students gain English language fluency while supporting their educational development and academic growth.

Some schools in the Ventura district offer bilingual education programs, including two-way immersion programs which continue through high school. VUSD proudly recognizes graduating seniors with its Multilingual Recognition Seal, and high school diplomas can also carry the California State Seal of Biliteracy. Our Multilingual and Multicultural Education Department can be accessed through VUSD's website.
