Art & Music

Children need time to sing, play, be creative, and explore the world around them.

Art

Children explore color, shape, and perception through art.

They are also exposed to different artists and styles as they work with various media and learn new vocabulary.

Art for Kids Hub offers numerous step-by-step drawing videos from preschool on up. Benefits include  improving hand-eye coordination and other fine motor skills; improving pre-writing skills; listening & following directions; learning about shape (seeing that parts make up a whole); gaining confidence and feeling successful. I love that the videos can be paused as often as necessary. Most kids enjoy the art activities and find them fun, challenging, and even relaxing, but the experience can also be frustrating for children who want their drawings to look "perfect". There is opportunity to help children learn that miskakes are not bad or wrong: They are opportunities to keep learning.

Music and Movement

Children learn through music and movement.  As they sing & dance, students exercise their bodies and brains.

Color Word Songs: We use color word songs to teach colors, letters, and spelling. You can find lyrics to the Frog Street Press color word songs, and most of the songs can be found on YouTube. (Here's the green song!)

Kindergarten Sight Word Songs: It's fun and easy to learn and remember how to spell sight words with Heidi. HeidiSongs' Sing and Spell The Sight Words, Volume 1 lyrics and hand motions can be found here. Volume 2 can be found here. Heidi's homepage has so much more, including some free downloads. TK has a subscription so that we can sing and dance throughout the day (yay!).

Performances: Students will have the opportunity to perform for their families a few times throughout the year. Upcoming events are posted  Parent Square in weekly classroom messages Monday Messages and in Bobcat News (monthly school newsletter).
