Geography is a way of seeing the world. It is fundamentally about the connections that exist between people, places, and the environment, and the ways in which these factors influence each other.
This unit study is suppose to refresh the memory for students who have already studied these concepts in the past. It also serves as an introduction for younger siblings who will study these topics in details in coming years. As always we include a rich diversity of learning tools, free printables, audios, videos, note booking and scrap booking page ideas, art lessons and suggested links to paid programs that you may or may not have access. Hopefully our children can learn that our great big world gets smaller each day via technology. May they realize that the war and famine in one country isn't just a headline but something that should touch their heart.

The Heritage History library contains hundreds of entertaining and easily-read history books which were written for students and history lovers many years ago. All the illustrations, maps, and other history-related material on our site were taken from traditional history books and student atlases that are no longer copyright protected and are available to republish without cost.
The mission of Heritage History is to make old-fashioned history books, written for the enjoyment of young people, easily available. The complete text of every book in our library can be read directly off the website, and both printable and e-Reader formats are available for every book on our website.
We developed the Heritage website with the intention of helping to re-popularize old-fashioned narrative history. We believe that the current trend of teaching Social Studies rather than history to young people is unfortunate, not so much because it is politicized, but because it is boring. Too many students leave school disinterested in history because it was never presented in an engaging manner.
At Heritage History, we seek to promote, not so much the study of history as the enjoyment of History. By making available old-fashioned history, as it was enjoyed as a pastime rather than studied as a subject, we hope to help reawaken the interest of a new generation.
Learning happens best when kids are actively engaged and interested. So the Layers of Learning curriculum is made up of hands on activities and real books, not textbooks.
Packed with information, every page is lined with sidebars that are designed to take you off on tangents learning about interesting people, exploring the web, engaging in creative writing assignments, and layering your basic learning with related subjects.
What's Included? History - Science - Geography - Arts
We searched in vain for comprehensive programs that would take our kids from 1st grade through high school in these subjects. We love doing these subjects as a group, all ages together.
Every unit includes a complete section on each of history, geography, science, and arts.
All of these subjects are covered thoroughly, yes, even for high school, in our curriculum.
PBS "Freedom" is the overarching theme of this sixteen-part series, based on the award winning books by master storyteller Joy Hakim. Freedom is what has drawn to America countless human beings from around the world; it is what generations of men and women have lived and died for; it is, in a profound sense, our nation's highest calling.
This is also the story of the chief obstacles to American freedom -- the "unfreedoms" that have littered our national story, and in some cases have called its very integrity into question. But despite all the mistakes and all the tragic setbacks, there is an overarching positive message to this series.
This is a history of the United States as the unfolding, inspiring story of human liberties aspired to and won.
Teaching American History - The Ashbrook Center is pleased to provide homeschool families with a free high-school-level curriculum in American History and Government. The curriculum uses primary sources to guide students through the history of our great nation, reading the words of those who formed it and guided it to where we are today. We believe the best way for students to learn about history is to be exposed to the words of those who made history, not through textbooks and secondary sources which too often present a skewed version of the past.
Our curriculum focuses on ten primary documents, each formed into a unit, beginning with America’s founding and the Declaration of Independence, continuing through the Civil War era, and culminating in the Civil Rights movement and King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Each unit provides many additional readings to support the primary document. Each unit also provides multiple assessment options for students to demonstrate their knowledge. Choose whichever assessment method that suits your child best.
At The Classical Historian, teachers learn how to lead the Socratic discussion by watching the DVD lessons which teach the tools of the historian, and through the "Teaching the Socratic Discussion" book. There are common questions that the teacher asks for every Socratic discussion in history. It is best if the teacher completes the readings with the student, but very often, it is better if the teacher is not an expert in history. It is the responsibility of the students to complete the readings and bring their ideas to the discussion.
The Classical Historian utilizes games: Memory Games and Go Fish Games. The Memory Games are aimed at kids ages 5-10, teach memorization skills and names of places, people, and events. The Go Fish Games are aimed at kids ages 8-18 and teach more complicated skills, such as association, history facts, and chronology. Each of our history Go Fish Games has a corresponding book that teaches the history of each of the images. When kids play the game, the parent or instructor uses the book to teach the history of each of the images as part of the game. Customers can buy the game without the book, or the game with the book.
