EP 1 : NEW HIRES

Terry and Red are hired at Big Oil Stadium, formerly Big Dreams Stadium. They're given one job, to form the chalk based foul lines.

The only caveat: DON'T. EAT. THE. CHALK.

So of course some pigeons do, and now the boys must form the foul lines while avoiding a giant pigeon kaiju.

Development

The First Pancake

When looking at Liminal Summers as a whole, the team took a bunch of ideas and formulated a season with a strong arc while balancing complexity of epsiodes.

EP 1 was the hardest out of the batch. It was a perfect episode to see how far the team could push their skills and find where any flaws may be in the system.

With the most studio experience and nothing on the line, Maddie jumped in to direct and stress test the first pancake, helping shape how to make the rest of the season.

First Draft to Final Draft

The first draft was called "Foul Lines", and focused on the action and the immediate weird world of Big Oil Stadium.

After developing the rest of the episodes and solidifying who the characters really are, the team went back in and rewrote the first episode to showcase more of Terry and Red, and set up gags for following episodes.

What you'll see in the revisit is a focus on why Terry and Red are friends even in the weirdest of circumstances.

Terry & Red v. Terry & Red

Before Liminal Summers even became a production, Kevin hired artist Gwen to design Terry and Red.

Terry was a cool guy obsessed with baseball, and Red was a would-rather-be-anywhere-else dude who hated to work.

But once that version of their friendship hit edit, the team found a problem. We didn't LOVE the characters.

So we went back to the drawing board! Literally.

Terry & Red 2.0

Emma was tasked with revamping to who Terry and Red became.

Terry became a hopeful, charismatic guy who just wants to do good. He loves baseball and wants to do well in this job, so well in fact sometimes he makes himself overly nervous.

Red balances out Terry's nervous energy with a lovable over-confidence. He always tries to do good but hasn't thought his actions all the way through. And sometimes his over confidence in "everything will be okay" gets them in trouble.

Warner

David Gallic was the perfect choice for Warner from the get-go. The team knew he'd be able to make the character lovable and gruff. A perfect blend of a father-figure for Terry and Red while also balancing being just as run down as his stadium.

Once the team heard what David brought to the character, Warner was designed to match the equal parts lovable, equal parts exhausted portions of his personality.

Why Big Oil? Why The Slicks?

Originally the team was named The Barons. But since The Barons actually exist, the leadership team had to go in and figure out a completely original name, and the artists voted on
The Slicks!

Then came the jokes, and gags, and playing into the owners. While the stadium had always hinted at Big Dreams Stadium, it was only an in-crew gag. During the EP 1 rewrite, Maddie wrote in the lore of the stadium, and pushed the artists towards multiple jokes within designs to play into the idea of a Big Oil Stadium.

Oakley was the first to dive in, creating an incidental of a Polar Bear Dad who would be team Big Oil, not team Slicks, team actual Big Oil. It got enough of a laugh out of the crew and Maddie wrote the character into EP 2.

Then Andrew took over, creating small gags to fill out the stadium, making it a lived-in world. Keep a sharp eye out and you'll spot various gags, posters, jerseys, etc that are nods to our team.
