Population Pyramid of Italy

The age structure of a population affects a nation's key socioeconomic issues. Countries with young populations (high percentage under age 15) need to invest more in schools, while countries with older populations (high percentage ages 65 and over) need to invest more in the health sector (The World FactBook). This shows the population of Italy to have a stable population in the third stage of population growth. This type of pyramid shows an aging population with a declining birth rate, low death rate, and long life expectancy. It appears that people (females specifically) are living longer.

Age Structure of Italian Citizens

0-14 years: 13.6% (male 4,326,862 /female 4,136,562)

15-24 years: 9.61% (male 2,994,651 /female 2,984,172)

25-54 years: 41.82% (male 12,845,442 /female 13,183,240)

55-64 years: 13.29% (male 4,012,640 /female 4,261,956)

65 years and over: 21.69% (male 5,817,819 /female 7,683,330)

Estimated Population Rate for 2020

This estimate for the population of 2020 shows that the population will continue to gradually increase until 2020 and then slowly drop off afterwards. This chart is interesting as it shows the near future estimates in population and despite immigration to Italy, the population remains fairly steady.

Refugee Numbers

According to the World FactBook, the refugee numbers from their origin country are as follows:

17,171 (Afghanistan), 18,026 (Nigeria),

15,966 (Pakistan), 15,641 (Somalia),

13,206 (Mali), 10,273 (Gambia),

7,940 (Eritrea), 6,412 (Cote d'Ivoire) (2017),

6,197 (Senegal), and 12,535 (Ukraine) (2018)

Immigration to Italy

According to the World Population Review, it's estimated there are over 5 million foreign residents in Italy today, which accounts for 7.5% of the total population, this includes about 500,000 children born in Italy to foreign nationals. Official figures for Italy's population exclude illegal immigrants, as their numbers are hard to determine. The number of illegal immigrants entering the company has increased by 43% in 2016, according to best estimates (World Population Review, 2019).

Citizenship of Italy

Italy has a style of government in which being born in the country is not enough to allow for citizenship in Italy. To attain citizenship through decent, one parent must be a citizen of Italy. The residency requirement for becoming a citizen is four years for EU nationals, five years for refugees and specified exceptions, and ten years for all others.
