What Did You Say?

As I have grown up I have always been faced with the question, “What do you want to do?” Like clockwork at every family gathering I am faced with the same questions and no clue how to answer them. “Where are you going to college? Do you know what you want to do? What majors have you thought about going into?” Like I’ve already figured out what I want to do for the rest of my life. With no idea of how to answer that and no idea of how to go about answering them I started asking myself questions. “Do I even want to go to college? Do I go to college for something random? Should I spend that much money on something I'm probably not interested in?”

Personally, I don’t think college is the way to go. College tends to be very expensive. OntoCollege.com says that a semester of college could cost around $9,000. When constantly being pushed to go to college this cost tends to stress people out. It tends to make you think that whatever you go into is what you have to stick to or it’s a waste of money. That’s completely fair. Should you really be going to college for something you might not actually want to do for the rest of your life.
While debating if you should go to college, you should also be debating if you are in a good enough place mentally to handle the burdens of college. The New York Times says, “More than 60 percent of students surveyed during the 2020-2021 academic year met criteria for one or more mental health problems.” More often than not you are not ready for college and should take a minute to help yourself.
Another thing I think we should be considering is that not every job requires a college education. Figuring out what you want to do before you start applying for colleges is going to give you the time you need to figure out what you actually want to do. After that you can figure out how to go about getting the job of your dreams. There are so many other ways to go about it and I believe they should be considered.
Overall, you should really take the time to figure out if college really is the best option for you. Find what you want to do before you go to college for it. Don't go to college to find what you want to do. Joe Andrew once said, “The hardest decisions in life are not between good and bad or right and wrong, but between two goods and two rights.”
