According to the NYT over 85% of the population of the U.S. support funding for renewable energy discovery. 85% of the U.S. population wants to find a way for a more sustainable source of energy, so why don't we make the change? According to the NOAA between 1901 and 2020 the global temperature of our planet has grown 1.8 degrees fahrenheit, which doesn't sound like an amount that could be hurtful but its impacts will be significant in the future if nothing is done.
Climate change is problematic on a scale no one believes could be real, just because of a few numbers going up slowly. People may ask, why should I care? As time has gone on people got used to thinking that, “it doesn't affect me”. Just as we all share this earth it should be our duty not to destroy it,this is the only planet we have and will not get another.
Climate change affects everyone even if it may not seem like it. It affects the weather and temperatures you experience when going outside, that includes the wild life that have to live out in the slowly diminishing conditions. According to the NOAA the oceans sea level continues to increase every year by about 1.7 mm but this number is rising quickly. The icebergs on either side of the world melt thus making the sea level rise to present level that will eventually affect all coastal cities. This fact mixed with the human birth rates rising leads only to catastrophic effects that we will not be able to recover from.
It may seem like it is soley up to the governments and big energy companies to make the switch to clean energy, this is not true. There are steps you can take as an individual to help prevent this crisis from happening. One of the steps you can take is reaching out to your energy provider and asking them about their renewable energy plan. Some companies may say they don't have one as funding is now just picking up for clean energy, in time i believe these options will become available to every household. Another great way to try to decrease fossil fuel emission is to reduce your carbon footprint. It can be simple things like not using electricity when it isn't needed for long periods of time.
I know as someone who's from gen z this topic is big for us and important as anything else. I know all of us together united even on something like this, we can make a change before irreversible damage is done. The little you can do as an individual adds up quickly if all of us do these things to try to help our world live on in a cleaner, brighter future.
