Two seasons ago, we were all wondering if Nick Sirianni lost his touch with the locker room. In 2024, things got off to a rough 2-2 start and it looked like the Philadelphia Eagles were going to experience deja vu by falling apart. However, the team completely resurged and are now the ones hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. Sirianni went from being one of the most overrated head coaches in football to a champion. Jalen Hurts redeemed himself from his lone Super Bowl loss and won the MVP. Saquon Barkley transformed the offense into a machine and the defense was a dominant train from start to finish. This offseason, Philadelphia unfortunately lost some pieces that were key contributors, but the nucleus is still intact. Now they are hoping to become just the third team in the millenium to win back-to-back championships, but with heavier expectations placed on their shoulders, let’s see if they have what it takes to pull it off.

For anybody said that Jalen Hurts did not have what it takes to win a championship, they can shut up right now. If you watched that Super Bowl against the Chiefs, he outplayed Patrick Mahomes from start to finish, and it was the plays that he made that earned him the MVP of the game. Yes, Saquon had a historic 2,000 yard season, but everyone in Philadelphia knew that they were not going far without Hurts under center. When Barkley was contained, it was the passing weapons that stepped up, and they will be back for at least another year. AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith form one of the more lethal receiving duos in the league, but more importantly, they kept tight end Dallas Goedert in Philly for the foreseeable future. Just imagine what could happen if younger players like Johnny Wilson or Jahan Dotson increase their production. To top it all off, the Eagles have one of the best offensive lines with All-Pro caliber players at almost every single position. Barring any key injuries, the Eagles should still have one of the best offenses in football because they did not suffer any significant turnover from last year.

However, I cannot say the same thing for the defense as it lost plenty of its veteran players. Josh Sweat left in free agency, Darius Slay and James Bradberry were released, and CJ Gardner Johnson was traded. But at the same time, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is still running the number one ranked unit and he will be banking on the younger guys to step up their games. The defensive line is still anchored by Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis, with Nolan Smith and potentially Jalyx Hunt helping on the edge. The second level is led by Zack Baun, Nakobe Dean, and rookie Jihaad Campbell. What makes this defense incredibly dangerous is their two young defensive backs Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell, who are quickly evolving into key cornerstones. Last but not least, they have Reed Blankenship and Sydney Brown controlling the deep part of the field, so this defense still has plenty of depth to work with. I do not believe they will be as dominant as they were last year, but I do not expect them to revert right back to where they were two years ago, when they were one of the worst units in the league.

The worst case scenario for this football team is they repeat what happened in 2023: getting off to a great start, only for significant flaws to get exposed as they collapse before the playoffs, in which they get annihilated. But unlike the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia proved that they know what it takes to win and have the pieces to get the job done. As long as they do not get in their own way, this team will be in great shape.
