Oh wow, the New York Jets had another dismal season and brought in an entirely new regime. I absolutely did not see that coming. Well, let’s just hope this one lasts longer than a few seasons. After the Aaron Rodgers experiment completely blew up, the organization decided to start from scratch with Aaron Glenn as the new head coach and Darren Mougey as general manager. We are now in the first phases of the Jets cycle: hope that these two can finally turn things around. Let’s jump into the next phase: vent about how the roster is better than most people think.

Instead of drafting a highly touted quarterback or desperately overpaying a veteran, the Jets decided to go outside the box and give a two-year minimum deal to Justin Fields. The former Bear and Steeler proved that he is incredibly talented at his position, but the biggest knock on his career is that he has failed to maximize his potential. If he is starting all seventeen games, we know what we are getting. He will make a couple of dazzling plays with his legs, he will give you tremendous flashes with his arm, but it will not be consistent. He won’t embarrass himself, yet he is not the guy that is going to take you to a Super Bowl. When you look at the Jets quarterbacks over the years, this is a damning statement. Glenn brought over Tanner Engstrand, the former Lions passing game coordinator, to be the new offensive coordinator. We will get a chance to see what he is made of in this league, but Engstrand has a few promising pieces he can utilize. Breece Hall and Braelon Allen form a legitimate running back tandem, with the latter hoping to scratch the surface in his sophomore season. Garrett Wilson is an incredibly talented wide receiver, and now that he will have a former Buckeye throwing him the ball, he might finally get the breakout season we have all been waiting for since he was drafted. However, I am curious to see who the number two option will be. I doubt it will be Josh Reynolds, even though he knows the scheme Engstrand wants to run. It could be Malachi Corley, it might be Arian Smith, or even tight end Mason Taylor. Heck, Allen Lazard or Jeremy Ruckert might have surprising breakthrough seasons. In regards to the offensive line, they were okay last year, but are hoping to prove that they are even better with a younger quarterback under center. With their first round pick, the Jets drafted the best right tackle prospect in Armand Membou to complement Olu Fashanu. The interior is anchored by the likes of Joe Tippmann, Alijah Vera-Tucker, and John Simpson, all three of them proven starters that are ready to elevate Fields’ performance of play. I am not expecting this offense to thrive right away, but I think that the more reps they have together, the more improvement that we will see as the season progresses.

Besides being a great leader of men, Aaron Glenn was brought in to make sure that this defense does not lose its identity. It is a young and hungry group that proved to be the backbone of the football team when Robert Saleh was in charge, but once he was let go, the unit took a surprising regression. Now that a new regime is in place, it is time for this defense to get their confidence back. They have a burgeoning amount of playmakers on their front four, starting with Quinnen Williams, who is still one of the best defensive tackles in the league. Will McDonald had a breakout season last year and Jermaine Johnson will be returning from a season ending knee injury, with veteran Derrick Nnaid joining to solidify the core. Quincy Williams and Jamien Sherwood will be in charge of the second level, with the latter linebacker tying for third in total tackles. However, their run defense has been their biggest weakness for a while now, so Glenn knows that stuffing the trenches will be the number one objective to accomplish. What really disappointed me last season, however, was their secondary. It only came up with seven interceptions, and that number is not expected to change drastically now that both DJ Reed and Ashtyn Davis are gone. Sauce Gardner is still one of the best corners in the league, but he had an up-and-down season last year, so there will be a lot of pressure on his shoulders this year. Michael Carter II is the highest paid slot corner in football, yet his 2024 season was limited due to injuries. Brandon Stephens was considered the weak link in Baltimore and is essentially filling the same role at MetLife, so I am not entirely optimistic with their corner situation. I feel confident about the safety group because I think Tony Adams has slowly developed into a starting caliber player. However, newly signed Andre Cisco had a surprisingly horrible 2024 season, which means there is a good chance that rookie Malachi Moore could usurp him on the depth chart at some point in 2025.

If this were any organization, I would say that it is going to take time for this team to fully get back on track, but the Jets fans have been hearing those words for far too long. I will be pleasantly surprised if they overachieve early, yet I know that they are limited in more than a couple of facets. If this team is truly going to earn a spot in the playoffs, then every single thing needs to go right for them, and I seriously doubt it will happen right away.
