VCCS Virtual Computer Lab through MyMECC
The VCCS has created a Virtual Computing Lab (VCL). The Virtual Computers (VCs) are available for any VCCS student, no matter their device, and require a very small amount of bandwidth.
What will be specifically helpful for dual enrollment students is that they can use their Chromebooks to access the VCL, bringing MECC campus computers to their high-school Chromebooks. For example, if a student is in a DE - ITE 119 class, students can use their Chromebook to log in to MyMECC & the VCL and get a virtual computer with Windows OS and MS Office.
The link below provides some basic information about the VCL and some short tutorials for accessing/using the VCL on various types of devices.

Spotlight:
Using GetHelp
The Lee County School system is launching a new site that will assist staff and students with getting the help they need for technology and maintenance needs at school or with their school issued devices. Students and all staff will have the ability to complete their own help tickets and interact (answer questions or chat) with the technician assigned to their ticket. Follow the directions below to create a ticket:
Click on the following link to go to the GetHelp Create a ticket site: https://leecps.gethelphss.com/
Or click on the side box LCPS Student/Parent Technology Ticket.
Select “Sign in”
You will automatically be prompted to either select your google login (your @leecoschools.com or @lee.k12.va.us account) if you are already logged in or to login with your google login (your @leecoschools.com or @lee.k12.va.us account) if you are not already.
Once you have logged in, you will be prompted to “Create a ticket.” This is how you report issues with technology or maintenance. All staff and students should complete their own tickets or ask the school technology representative for assistance. Remote students - please use the “Remote Students” button under “Student Issues.” This ensures that someone will call you to make arrangements if your device needs to be brought in to repair. It is important to relay the correct site for your need in order to engage the appropriate staff member.
If you are in the Lee County Career & Technical Center, the Division Central Office or Head Start Main Office, please select “District Office” as your site. If you are in the Head Start Central Office, please check the box that says, “Head Start Main Office.” If you are at the Alt. Ed building, select Pennington Middle School as your site.
After you have created a ticket, keep an eye on your email for updates and/or questions. Sometimes additional information requests are made and you will be notified of these via email. You can also respond to these via email.
You can also log in to the site again and see your active tickets. You can read updates and add comments if there is additional information to relay. You can even add comments to closed tickets if there is more information to relay.

Coronovirus: What you need to know
There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
Stay home when you are sick.
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.

Cyber Bullying
§ 18.2-152.7:1. Harassment by computer; penalty.
If any person, with the intent to coerce, intimidate, or harass any person, shall use a computer or computer network to communicate obscene, vulgar, profane, lewd, lascivious, or indecent language, or make any suggestion or proposal of an obscene nature, or threaten any illegal or immoral act, he shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. (Virginia Law, Code of Virginia)
Virginia’s cyber bullying laws
Sadly, teens are often the victims of Internet slander by their classmates and adults. The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) released Guidelines and Resources for Internet Safety in Schools that establish policies for student behavior and consequences of violations. In 2009, the legislature passed §22.1-279.6 of the Code of Virginia to govern the Board of Education model policy for the prohibition of bullying, harassment and intimidation through the Internet and social media platforms..Using the Internet to threaten, stalk and harass another person is illegal under §18.2-60 and §18.2-152.7:1 of the Code of Virginia. (Internet & Social Media Defamation, Denton and Denton, Attorneys at Law)
"According to the First Amendment, students have the right to post what they want on social media networks and should be able to do so without consequence. However, since cyber-bullying can result in violence, it may not be protected by the First Amendment." (The Student Voice, 2013)
STOP BULLYING
Types of Bullying
Bullying comes in many forms. It occurs repeatedly and is a way for the perpetrator to show their power. Whether the bullying is verbal, physical, relational, or cyberbullying, the results are detrimental.
Verbal bullying involves spoken words. The person may threaten or call names. They may use disrespectful language toward family, friends, or specifically aimed at their target.
Physical bullying is aggression in the form of hitting, kicking, pushing, or any unwanted touch.
Relational bullying involves purposely excluding someone from activities, groups, or events through social tactics.
Cyberbullying includes using social media, texts, and the internet to spread rumors, lies, or mean messages about a person.
Each type of bullying may have similar effects on the targeted person. They may withdraw even from their family or become mysteriously ill often. It’s essential to keep an open line of communication with children and students. Encourage students to participate in activities outside the home. Teach children the appropriate use of the internet, social media, and text. Have daily discussions with family members about their day. Set boundaries for behavior and provide a role model for how you expect them to behave and treat others.
The U.S. Department of Human Services set up a hotline that’s available 24/7 to receive assistance stopping bullying. Call 1-800-273-8255.
In the U.S., the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1-800-273-8255. Also, in the U.S., the Suicide National Hopeline is 1-800-784-2433. Spanish is 1-888-628-9454.
