Announcement in Regards to the Lunar Eclipse

Lee County Public Schools will be operating on a regular schedule on Monday, August 21, 2017. There are numerous activities that are scheduled at each school to observe the solar eclipse in a safe manner whether it be by watching the event on television, on the internet, or outside. LCPS will be providing certified glasses to all staff and students who wish to participate in these events. In order to obtain these glasses, the students must attend school.

However, if a student is absent on Monday or checks out, then the absence or check out will be excused administratively and it will not count toward perfect attendance or truancy. This is an effort to honor numerous requests from parents/guardians who have requested permission to participate in the event with their child or wish to travel to areas that are more directly in the path of the eclipse. During the morning hours, the regular instructional program will continue as planned.

Announcement in Regards to The Glasses

As the date of the solar eclipse approaches, we would like to provide information on the solar eclipse glasses that have been purchased to enable students (with parent/guardian permission) to experience this event. The glasses were purchased from Lunt Solar System and are included on the list of American Astronomical Society approved glasses which meet international safety standards. The link to this list can be found at https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/safety. The Certificate of Compliance which certifies the glasses meet ISO 12312-2 standards is attached for your perusal. This information is being provided to assist you in making an informed decision with regard to your child participating in this event. Parent/guardian permission is required for students to participate in any and all outdoor learning experiences during the eclipse.
