Texas Reds Fesitval

Why does the Texas Reds Festival exist and who does it support?

Excerpt from Texas Reds Festival website:

"Texas Reds Festival is an event managed by the Downtown Bryan Association, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Originally started in 2007 by the City of Bryan, Texas Reds Festival was established to showcase the revitalization of Downtown Bryan, and to be the signature festival for Bryan. Since taking over management of the festival in 2014, the Downtown Bryan Association has given back almost $25,000 to local non-profit and civic organizations and awarded scholarships to Bryan ISD graduates. Each year, we look forward to giving back even more than the year before!"

My Role

During my volunteer shift, I was in the ticket booth located on William J. Bryan Parkway across from the Accessibility Help Desk (as seen on the map). My job was to sell different packages of tickets for the customers. I was able to actively and clearly communicate to various people from all over Texas, the ticket options and prices. I also handled a company iPad and credit card swiper to complete purchases.

What did I learn?

One of the most significant take-aways from this volunteer experience was more of a wake-up call to the importance of communication. The training beforehand was simple and mainly focused on how to work the iPad and credit card swiper. However, I found it difficult to answer various questions the customers had about the festival, which may have reflected badly on the event itself. As a future event coordinator, I will take into consideration the value of training and communicating to volunteers and staff well. I can assure this will take more effort but, it will ultimately cause less damage control for the duration of the event and keep volunteers coming back!
