RPTS Tacky Prom 2019

What is Tacky Prom?

Tacky Prom 2019 was one of the first social events for the Recreation, Park and Tourism department in years. It was a gathering put on by my colleagues in the Hildebrand Equine Complex in the hopes of gaining event management experience, but also to encourage social relationships between fellow students. faculty/staff and even students outside of the department!

It was an prom event that brought back the good ol' days with a tacky theme. As guess entered there was a cute little guest book where eveyone who attended could sign their name. There was dancing, a food truck, popcorn and cotton candy. There was also corn hole, cake, punch and a photo booth for entertaining guests.

Overall, this event was created to encourage long-lasting connections to be formed socially and academically with the department.

Oh! How could I forget! It was also created to just have FUN!!! :-)

My Role

When I arrived for my volunteer shift from 5:30 pm-9 pm everything was already set up. All I had to do was go to my station, Cotton Candy, and wait to receive instructions on how to make it. For the remainder of the time my friend and I made cotton candy for any guest who would like them. During this time, we enjoyed interacting with guests who included our professors and fellow students. My role did not include eating cotton candy, but I can assure you that did happen as well! After the event was over, we cleaned up our area.

This was our view throughout the night. We were stationed outside in a pavilion area. Notice corn hole and the food truck.

This was a beautiful sunset we got to enjoy while serving the prom guests.

This is the front of our booth.

What did I learn?

One of the more significant things I learned from this super fun event was making the best out of what you have. The budget for this event was minimal, so all the "saving-money" options were used even if it was not the most convenient or aesthetic option. For example, the venue that was booked was the Hildebrand Equine Complex. They chose this venue, even though it was overwhelmingly large, because of a discount on the venue. It made the space hard to fill with minimal decor and people. (Sometimes an empty event venue can lead people away.) But the postive side is us, students, got to learn how to manage a space and pracitce filling it with limited resources.
