It could be said that a school library has two hearts: the librarian and the library collection. Students who don't even like to read will frequent the library if they feel welcomed and accepted by the librarian. Students who may not care for the librarian will return to the library to search the shelves for the next book they won't want to put down. Maintaining a collection of books with broad impact and appeal is part of the art and science of being a librarian. The librarian has to know the students, their likes and dislikes, their favorite genres, their tendency to go back to their favorite titles again and again. The librarian also has to know the numbers, the statistics, the facts about circulation, what's in and what's out, and what's coming soon. It is an ongoing process of adding and subtracting and refining the collection to build a culture of literacy and give all students the opportunity to find something they'll love to read.
