The JRMS library supports the principle of intellectual freedom inherent in the First Amendment of the United State Constitution and the right of students and faculty to access materials and information without undue restriction. Intellectual freedom allows for the free exchange of ideas, viewpoints, and information so that faculty may foster and students may develop the ability to evaluate information, think critically, and make informed judgments in their daily lives. Well-informed students will become well-informed citizens who will contribute to the future well-being of their families, schools, communities, and nation.
Requests for reconsideration of library materials may only be made by parents or guardians of JRMS students, JRMS faculty, or JISD personnel, and will follow the procedure below.
Contact the JRMS librarian and schedule a meeting to discuss concerns about the material in question. If concern is resolved, the librarian will inform the campus principal of the concern and resolution.
If the concern is not resolved, complainant will complete the "Request for Reconsideration of Materials" form to initiate a formal review. The material will remain in the library collection during the reconsideration process.
Complainant's request and librarian's formal response based on library policies will be sent to the campus principal for review.
Schedule an initial meeting of the library advisory committee within ten business days of receiving the reconsideration request.
At the first meeting, the library advisory committee will review the complainant's request and, if possible, review the material in question, forming opinions on the material as a whole and not only on specific parts. If it is not possible to review the material in the same meeting, the librarian will provide a copy to each committee member to review before a second meeting.
The committee will reach a majority decision on whether or not to retain the material in question, and a report detailing the decision will be completed and given to the campus principal.
The principal will inform the complainant and the district superintendent of the committee's decision.
If the complainant is dissatisfied with the committee's decision, they may appeal to the superintendent and school board.
